Dark Souls is the predecessor to 2009’s acclaimed Demon’s Souls. If you’re shopping for a gamer this Holiday season that LOVES a challenge, and has a great deal of patience, Dark Souls is the perfect game to choose. Not only does it have a lot more content, some of the challenges it poses will daunt even the most seasoned veterans of Demon’s Souls. Because of this, it also provides one of the most rewarding gaming experiences around. This is the ideal game for anyone who enjoys a high risk, high reward venture in a dark medieval fantasy style setting. It would also provide the perfect holiday drinking game — take a drink every time the words “You Died” come up on the screen! (Note from the editor: Do not do this. You will probably die.)

The ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection ($39.99)

Rated: T — Ages 13+

Team ICO’s two legendary games for the price of one. As someone who previously played and purchased the original PlayStation 2 versions of the game, I still couldn’t pass this one up. The collection is definitely a must-have for those who have never experienced either masterpiece before. Both games have been polished and updated into splendid 1080p resolution and for those with a 3D TV, both titles are now fully compatible. The two games are also considered the pre-cursor for Team ICO’s third and upcoming title, The Last Guardian, and would be the perfect gift for anyone looking for a more unique, artistic gaming experience.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations ($58.99)

Rated: M — Ages 17+

Two years ago in Assassin’s Creed II, we were introduced to the Italian noble-turned-Assassin, Ezio Auditore. The follow-up to last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood was released this November, and we’ll finally have the conclusion to Ezio’s story and impact on the assassins. With revamped multiplayer returning from its predecessor in addition to the main single-player, sandbox-style game, Assassin’s Creed is one of Ubisoft’s most revered properties, and Revelations definitely delivers.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection ($49.99)

Rated: M — Ages 17+

Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series is renowned for its innovation, amazing characters and its top-notch, action-oriented tactical espionage gameplay. The HD Collection has been fully upgraded to 1080p, and includes Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 (my personal favorite in the series) and PSP’s Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. This set of games would be perfect for anyone who ever wanted to play Metal Gear Solid 4, but never caught up, or anyone in anticipation of next year’s Metal Gear Rising. The total package has quite a bit of replay value, and is a convenient choice for anyone looking to get into the series for the first time, but who doesn’t know where to begin. (Hint: Start with MGS3!)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim ($59.99)

Rated: M — Ages 17+

Despite not being a fan of the series’ previous entry, Oblivion, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has gone above and beyond to create a unique gameplay experience unlike any other. This medieval fantasy adventure allows players to go whenever they choose and play the game in any way they’d like. With such a wealth of content, there’s no end in sight for when it comes to what you can do in this game. You can collect books, weapons, join a variety of different orders, groups or schools and collect just about any item that’s lore appropriate. Wanna’ wipe out an entire town of villagers? Go for it. Feel like getting into a bar fight with a Drunken Bard? Skyrim literally offers something to every type of gamer, and even the most jaded of gamers can find something to take away from it.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine ($56.99)

Rated: M — Ages 17+

Do you like finding nasty ways to kill hundreds and hundreds of green orks? Do you want to play a shooter that doesn’t rely on cover? Look no further than Space Marine, the best game that no one is playing right now. Players take on the role of Captain Titus, one of the best Ultramarines in the Empire, as he tries to save human colonies from being completely massacred by orks. The gameplay is unique, the story is deeply woven, and many, many orks will die. (Recommended by Keri.)

Batman: Arkham City ($51.96)

Rated: T — Ages 13+

The Batman is back, and he’s ready to brawl. Once again, Rocksteady has gotten the formula just right for a game that’s not only hilariously fun to play, but will also provide hours of treasure-hunting entertainment. If you loved Arkham Asylum, this is really just more of the same, but in a great way. Also, the addition of Catwoman makes for a fun new way to play, whether you resent her being add-on content or not.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception ($43.96)

Rated: T — Ages 13+

Nathan Drake’s on another adventure. This time, he’s focusing on Sir Frances Drake and T.E. Lawrence — better known as Lawrence of Arabia. The single-player is, once again, downright cinematic, and the multiplayer’s a ton of fun, especially with friends. In any case, the gang is back and you’re on the search for another legend. Is there really anything else you need to know?

inFAMOUS 2 ($39.99)

Rated: T — Ages 13+

What’s life like as a Conduit — an electric man? The first inFAMOUS game gave us that answer, but this one introduces a bigger threat and a city that almost exists as a character in itself. If you lived in or remember New Orleans post-Katrina, maybe the game’s New Marais will hit a little close to home, but the simple fact that it might be a little too much is an artistic achievement in itself. Ultimately, the game itself isn’t that kind of meaningful, but it fixes the problems of its predecessor and then some. What’s left is some of the best open-world fun you can have this year.

L.A. Noire ($34.62)

Rated: M (for very, very good reasons — see our podcast and traditional review) — Ages 17+

1940s L.A. isn’t all glitz and glamour. Not unless you’re counting the sheen of blood as glitz, and incredibly graphic murder scenes as a special kind of glamour. Rockstar appropriately captures the feeling of L.A. post-WWII as a place in a struggle between what it once was and what it is becoming. You play as Cole Phelps, a rookie detective working his way up the ranks at the LAPD. He finds himself in the middle of a horrific mystery that tests relationships and turns his life upside-down. The new “complete edition” of the game includes all of the downloadable cases — a true bargain, here. I suppose that we could also talk about the fantastic facial animation technology on display, but that’s been done to death at this point. Suffice it to say that no game’s faces look better or more realistic animation-wise.

Portal 2 ($39.90)

Rating: E-10+ — Ages 10+

Portal 2 is one of my favorite games of the year, mostly because I got (and continue to get) so much mileage out of it. But even for the non-Portal-superfan, it’s just a great, challenging game. The puzzle game once again returns you to Aperture Science, ruled by malevolent AI GLaDOS. This time, you’re not so alone in your battle against her. Here, you’ll play through the (much longer) single-player game, but you’ll return for the co-op campaign, where you play as two robots and get to play with twice as many portals. The brain-stretch and subsequent feeling of glee you get when you finally solve a puzzle can’t be beat by anything out there. The PS3 version of the game also comes with an additional, PC/Mac copy of the game for when you’re away from your console.

No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise ($29.95)

Rating: M — Ages 17+ (Again, for very, very good reasons)

Travis Touchdown, the pitiful otaku-turned-assassin, makes the jump to PlayStation 3 with this remake of the one Wii title that always stood out to me as being strictly for adults. Suda51′s crazy edge is fully on display here, and the best part is that the game even uses the underutilized PlayStation Move peripheral to recreate the Wii experience. Of course, if you don’t have that, it’s cool. There’s an alternate input method using the controller. If you’re looking for something just a little zany with a ton of nerdy jokes, this is your winner.

Hopefully out of all these suggestions, you find something you want this holiday! Unfortunately, most of these aren’t exactly kid-friendly, but for everyone else, there’s a good chance that you can find something among these.

Hey everyone, it’s another update for the custom Magic: the Gathering card set! It’s a new year, so let’s start it off with these long-awaited cards for the lovely staff here at GamingAngels.com as well as a special New Year’s card with art done by our own Naomi. Personally, I’m really excited to be sharing these with all of you. I’ve been working on the staff cards for a while, making sure they’re just perfect and fitting for the staff that the represent.

So let’s get this party started! First we have Trina, the Awesome. She boasts Protection from Staff. Her power and toughness are equal to the number of awesome things she’s planning.

Then, we have our lovely Elizabeth, who also has protection from staff while her power and toughness are equal to the number of emails in her inbox. I don’t want to know how high those numbers can get! She also can’t be the target of instants.

Lastly is the Happy New Year card which can be played at any time, even that weird in between phases step! You never know if the New Year will strike in the middle of an epic battle.

Well, that’s it for this time everyone! Coming up next, I think we can expect to see Annette and Naomi and possibly yours truly. Until then everyone!

Xbox 360

We all know that the holidays are a time where you spend time with family and friends. But sometimes you get a bit more family time than you would like. Microsoft has sent us a list of things you can escape to on your Xbox 360 or you may even want to invite Grandma to play with you.

First up is a special 1vs100 Live Holiday show on December 26 at 6pm PT. The set is decked out in festive gear, Chris Cashman is there to entertain and you can try to make it as the one. If you have silver, don’t fear because from December 24, 9amPT – December 28 9amPT you will be able to enjoy 1 vs 100 for free.

If you would rather frag someone over the holidays, you may want to make it Dane Cook. That’s right, the comedian that might have stole some jokes will be playing gamers on Sunday, December 27 from 7-9pm PT in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. All you have to do is send a friend request to Gamertag DCook GwF and be on Xbox Live 30 minutes before the game with fame session. Then wait for an invite.

Either way your avatar can get in the xmas mood with holiday items.

GamingAngels and Playstation want to get more Angels in the game, so they have sent along some beta keys for MAG that we will be giving away for Thanksgiving Weekend.

Games that Give has unveiled two new holiday themed games to their lineup, Ornaments, and Holiday Swap. Both of these games will get you into the spirit of the holiday season both in getting into games that offer great holiday imagery and in helping give to those in need. Ornaments is a match-3 shooting game in which players attempt to clear the colored ornaments from the screen before they reach bottom, and Holiday Swap is a classic swapping match-3 with icons from different holidays and wintry memories. Both games are a great way to take 5 and feel good about it! So So start playing!

I’m going to paste in all the events from the press release and you can pick which MMO you are interested in to read about. Enjoy and have a frighteningly good time!

Aion – Harvest Revel
During the Fall harvest, the people of Atreia have always celebrated the bounty of the land. Years ago, the joy of the annual revels was troubled by an eclipse—a peculiar and magical eclipse that brought darkness to Asmodae and Elysea. Ever since, for days during Harvest Revel, the sky goes dark and the people of Atreia join in the hunt.

Asmodians celebrate the bounty through the Wild Hunt, racing after the Wild Kurthanir hunt leader and cooking special dishes made from the meat. On the other side of Atreia, the Elyos encounter undead creatures pulled back into a semblance of life by the power of the eclipse. Elyos must join roving Dark Night bands to hunt and destroy the undead before they invade Elyos villages.

Each day during Harvest Revel players will be rewarded for their investment with new lore and tasty treats including a Halloween Hat and candy that will transform players into in game creatures!

Lineage II – “Scarecrow Jack” and Halloween Adena Art Contest
