Price Point: USD: $99.99

BUY

It’s been known in the past that I used to be terribly meek about my love for Logitech items. Years ago, the periph-house was known for making third-party items that were affordable but they really weren’t the best you could get. The plastic always felt ready to give way, everything clicked and clacked and the best technology was never in their hands.

Then something happened and it was magical — because starting in 2006, I noticed an upswing in design and quality that I was constantly waiting to be disappointed in. Suddenly everything Logitech was coming up roses and I seriously wondered when a day would come that I would be let down with what they had to offer as far as PC technology was concerned. When another box would show up at my door and I’d tentatively rip open the tape; a bit of trepidation and concern would rattle my heart as I wondered if this would be the day I’d be pouty. I constantly wait for Logitech to drop the proverbial ball.

I stared at the Logitch Wireless Desktop (MK710) and thought to myself that it wasn’t much to look at. When it came down to the keyboards meant for gaming and their sleek DiNovo line, this looked rather simplistic. Comfortable, but at first glance it just looked like a premium item. Mid-range looks, but then I unwrapped it and set it up. Ah, see.. it might not be much to look at, but as your parents always tell you; looks aren’t always everything.

The MK710 comes boxed with this tiny little USB nubbin that you can press neatly into a USB port on your computer. Seriously, it’s tiny! Losing this thing would be an easy task as it’s roughly the size of your thumbnail and is near invisible if you take it out. Trust me, I’ve lost it a few times already. However, this little nubbin (Yes, I like that term. Deal with it.) This tiny “Unifying Receiver” lets you put multiple wireless Logitech products onto ONE USB port instead of jacking everything in and clogging up your space. Nice idea, right? No, it’s brilliant. My number one concern with this concept was that it wouldn’t work as fluidly as it did and not only did I have no complications with installation — but I had no interference. For a person with as many things to plug into my PC as I do; this was nice. Consolidation! The LCD Dashboard was a nice touch too, which let me know how my battery was doing and if I was butterfingering the Num/Caps/Scroll Lock without even meaning to. No random lights on the keyboards meant my hands weren’t heating up randomly during my long typing sessions. Trust me, you think about these things when you’re on the PC as much as I am.

There were a few things that I wasn’t sure about when I was using it though and maybe it’s just my being used to laptop keyboards — but it was a labored experience. Typing, I mean. The keys were smooth and curved, but that sometimes meant that my soft and girly digits were sliding off every so often. Since the keys weren’t sensitive to the touch, I had to sometimes stroke over and repeat my keystrokes in order for them to be hard enough on the keys. If I were to suggest anything, it’d be that they made the keys a bit easier to depress for those of us used to laptop keyboards. That whole “Hammer Down and Beat On Keys” thing has been non-existant since I ditched my full on desktop for more travel-ready solutions. Be that as it may though, you could get comfortable with it easy enough and with the wrist-rest cushioning my stumbling keystrokes — I soon forgot how troublesome a learning curve it was.

I know what you gamers are thinking; “What about the mouse?!” and I didn’t forget about you. The mouse compliments this entire experience perfectly with responsiveness that is truly unmatched for a combination desktop set. The sculpted design fits perfectly for my hands, but seeing as how they’re small — maybe that’s just luck. I know that I’ve yet to have a mouse that so easily molded to the shape of my palm and that’s buttons felt so in-sync with how I use it. My thumb rested right atop the page-down & up buttons and the scroll was quiet and unobtrusive. Honestly, what else can I say? It did what it was supposed to and I noticed absolutely no slow-down or lag time with the wireless receiver.

As it stands, when I want an additional keyboard — I’m not grasping for the Logitech MK710 first when I have a selection open but that’s because of the key-type. It’s still an amazing keyboard and all, but yours truly is a bit whiny when it comes to her speed and if I don’t hammer out 190 words per minute — something is off. Some are used to the style though and will like the curved key and smooth design of the layout and they should surely give it a shot. The mouse though, that’s where my loyalty lies in this desktop set for it’s got all the heft and functionality of one of it’s higher-priced predecessors and it’s part of a duo. Beautiful little combination for a decent price point when you think about what you get; slick design, solid style and not a wire in sight.
