Less than a week before Sony launches the PlayStation Vita First Edition (not that I’m counting or anything), the company has detailed the process of getting downloadable PSP games onto the device.

It’s really easy, actually! You can either purchase PSP games directly from the PlayStation Store using the device (or check out your list of purchased games via the Store), or you can also connect your Vita to your PS3 to download any games you might have loaded on your PS3′s XMB. Granted, this will require you to download games to your PlayStation 3 first, assuming you have one, but the Vita’s Content Manager will take over and make the process easy.

Of course, all of this knowledge is useless without knowing which games you can actually play — 275 PSP titles and Minis will be available for play on day one with more on the way. This effectively makes the launch lineup about 300 strong.

Here’s the full list, straight from PlayStation.Blog:

When we heard that PlayStation Vita didn’t have a UMD drive, some people were a little worried. What the heck were they going to do with all those old UMD games for their PSP? Being apprehensive makes sense. Sony just announced their solution for Japanese consumers, UMD Passport.

The UMD Passport program allows you to download a free application, use that to register the UMD games you already own, and then you get…well, not your game again, for free. You get a discount on repurchasing whichever games you register.

At the moment, the repurchase price varies depending on the game, but it currently ranges from 500 to ¥2,400 ($6-31). Of course, economies are different, so if we get this program, the prices will likely look a bit different.

The program will eventually expand to around 200 games in Japan. Nowhere near the entire library, but it’s something.

PlayStation Vita goes on sale in Japan on December 17, and in the U.S. on February 22.

Release Date: March 22, 2011

BUY

As a fan of the Lego Series by TT Games (Traveller’s Tales), it is only natural that I’d be excited to play one of the latest installments, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. I didn’t go in having high expectations because, let’s face it, they’re all similar in gameplay. I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find that there were in-game references to other Lego titles such as Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and even a surprise reference to the latest game, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean. This game was super fun and includes some characters from the first games (Lego Star Wars and Lego Star Wars II) as well as many new ones from the Clone Wars (animated TV series).

First of all, there is the Prologue which is an easy and short beginning to the game, it also serves as a training area to familiarize you with the controls. The controls are very simple to master but there are a few new abilities and extras that are unique to this individual game. You begin as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. After traveling to Geonosis in search of Jango Fett, you are captured and being held captive in the Geonosis Arena. You must escape. This arena is packed and I mean PACKED with droids, more droids, space rhinos and an unfriendly kitty. From the beginning I really enjoyed the fast paced and chaotic action the game had to offer. It made it a bit more challenging. Also, the required actions to complete the levels were not so “straight forward” this time around. Thinking was involved and I’ll be completely honest, there were times I was confused and couldn’t figure out what to do right away. The levels are bigger, involving more content, more enemies and more actions to complete. This game made me happy! As with previous games there are levels which contain chapters. In this particular title there are 3 main levels with 6 chapters a piece. If you do the math, including the Prologue and Epilogue, that equals 20 levels of awesome! Not including Bonus Missions. If you’ve seen The Clone Wars animated series, you’ll see that it follows the storyline well. If you haven’t seen it, you won’t recognize the characters but you’ll catch on quick.

The graphics are a bit better than its predecessors. The characters themselves have more definition (facial) and each new environment is more colorful and vibrant. The menu (for chapters) has changed a bit and reminds me of the Lego Batman computer interface. There are no longer doors to be unlocked. There is a holographic system of planets that follow color coded paths through the levels. After completion of each chapter, you are brought back to the main hub where you can access everything at one console area. Although there are other areas in the hub, the game does not require running back and forth between rooms during your play through. We all know that can get boring, real fast. I was happy with the change.

Another new feature is the “Story Swap” mode. This was an interesting twist on single player that lets you play through two different storylines of a chapter, while ultimately working together to complete it. This is also very similar to the “Multiplayer” or co-op mode which is a great way to enjoy the game with friends and family.

As with numerous games, it’s nearly impossible to complete the game 100% without a second or maybe even a third play through, this is the case here. There are a multitude of unlockables available as well as achievements (48 to be exact) to be earned. “Story” mode is the only available mode at first; you must complete each chapter in “Story” mode to be granted “Free Play” ability. Once “Free Play” is unlocked, the game presents new challenges which make its replay value high and very worthwhile.

The Epilogue is intense. The game ends well, and one thing that made it very different was the ability to build troops of stormtroopers, vehicles, buildings and weapons. You will need an army. Eventually, a specific tank (RX 200) is required to take down the final boss. You will need to collect a great number of Lego Studs to do this and beat the game.

In my house, I am not the only Lego fan; my kids also enjoy the games very much and like to play in co-op. I feel that the game is very family friendly and fun (despite the violent battles and action packed gameplay). I’ve recommended this game to quite a few people, with and without kids. I do expect more from the Lego Franchise in the future; however, I don’t feel we’ll see another Star Wars game. I’m hoping for Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7! Please?

Also Available On: Wii, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, PC, Nintendo 3DS

At Gamescom yesterday, Sony announced a new pricing structure for the PlayStation 3. Effective immediately, the 160 GB and 320 GB consoles will be available at the lower prices of $249 and $299.

An inFamous 2 bundle will also be available for $299, and it’ll include a 320 GB console along with a copy of inFamous 2. That’s actually a pretty good deal. (And that’s a good enough game to start on.)

So — now the full console’s the same price as a Vita will be (speaking of Vita, apparently its RAM sits pretty at 512 MB after all). That might affect purchasing, but who really knows until they’re both out in the wild?

Speaking of a handheld, it looks as though the PSP’s gotten a bit of a redesign before Vita’s pushed out into the world. Well, in Europe, anyway. The new “E-1000″ version of the handheld is sleek, it retails for €99.00…and the WiFi’s been yanked right out of it. Well, then it’s pretty much only useful for UMDs, then.

You’ll also be able to load games onto the device using Media Go, so hopefully, you’re running Windows. But seriously…is a WiFi antenna that hard to put in?

PS Vita’s on the way…eventually. But despite that, it doesn’t look as though the PSP’s going down quickly, with a new bundle arriving August 30.

The “Madden NFL 12 & Need for Speed Shift PSP Entertainment Pack” offers both of those games, a PSP system and a 2GB memory card, all for $160 (like the other bundles).

One last hurrah for sports and racing fans, I suppose.

Apparently people thought that “through July 3″ meant until midnight when it came to downloading their PlayStation “Welcome Back” package. Not so, my friends! Though I could totally understand why you’d think that.

Sony has officially extended the free download campaign until 9 a.m. Pacific on July 5. Not so much confusion there, right? Well, I hope not, anyway.

So if you haven’t downloaded your games yet, you’ve still got another shot. Start the downloads before you head out to any super-patriotic barbeques and you might be playing as soon as you come home. (Note that I said “maybe.” Some of these games are on the huge side.)

Everything related to the offer is still the same as before, except the end time, and the download process itself is easy enough. The store might be slammed with last-minute redemptions, though, so don’t get too frustrated by a few errors.

(My personal picks from the PS3 batch are inFAMOUS and Dead Nation, by the way. If you were thinking about asking.

Sony announced this weekend that some PSP titles will be redeveloped specifically for the PS3, and released on Blu-Ray Discs. As these things usually go, it’s starting in Japan.

This new category of “PSP Remaster” titles will not only get a visual upgrade, but they’ll also add some new features, like SIXAXIS support and 3D. You’ll also be able to use your PSP filesaves on your PS3, then continue the game while you’re on the road. The PS3 will be adding an “ad hoc for PlayStation Portable” application.

Since Japan’s getting the new titles first, it makes sense that the first release will be a very Japanese one — Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD. (They could bring that to other shores, but I’m doubting it, personally — Monster Hunter hasn’t really taken off here.)

What PSP titles would you like to see make the jump to the console big brother?

Sony has officially announced the PlayStation Portable’s successor, currently codenamed NGP, for Next Generation Portable. Not only is it a beautiful piece [...]

Sony has officially announced the PlayStation Portable’s successor, currently codenamed NGP, for Next Generation Portable. Not only is it a beautiful piece of hardware (check out Sony’s official gallery here), but it’s got a whole bevy of features to make you want it. (If I had a zillion dollars, I would take the prototype.) What’s under that plastic hood?

A 5-inch OLED display

Two touch surfaces – a touch pad in the back, with the more traditional touchscreen on the front

3G and Wi-Fi connectivity (3G is only confirmed in Japan – who knows if this will come to any other territory)

Games now come on flash memory carts (kiss those UMDs goodbye – sorry, but this is to better humanity)

PS3-quality graphics (um, yes please)

Front- and rear-facing cameras

SIXAXIS controls (accelerometer, that whole deal)

One great big new thing that is needed like whoa: TWO ANALOG STICKS. Everyone cheer!

LiveArea appears to be the new user interface, from which you can learn about other titles as well as see what your friends are up to.

There may be some sort of GPS (since confirmed), since the “Near” feature shows you what everyone around you is playing. (What I wonder is if you’ll be able to see where your PSN friends are while using the device.) “Near” will also give you rankings – what game is popular, maybe trophies and scores? (Trophies are confirmed, by the way.)

A quad-core processor (like, seriously)

And, um…you can play Uncharted on it. (And other stuff, too, but that’s an oh-my-gosh-level thing for me.)

A few of the touch mechanics were shown off during an Uncharted demo for a brand-new NGP game – for instance, touch where you want Drake to go and he follows your fingers’ commands. Unless that means directing him to your couch or the seat next to you on the bus. Boo. (You can also sort of draw out the path you want him to take on the back of the device. Pretty neat.)

Developers also showed off game footage, some of which was just plain ported over from PS3 to show off just how easy that is to do. What did we see? Call of Duty, Monster Hunter, Yakuza 4 footage, Metal Gear Solid 4, the Unreal Engine and Lost Planet 2. Keep in mind that none of these are actual NGP games, but wait ’til E3. Some of these series have to be coming back. (Other developers on board include Ubisoft, PopCap, Square Enix, 2K and Rockstar, but there are more.)

Looks…amazing. Unfortunately, it won’t be out until this holiday season. Gotta figure out how to fit all that expensive stuff in there and not have it cost a billionty dollars.

Sony also announced PlayStation Suite, which will work on Android phones (one of which was NOT announced today, by the way). You’ll get to download new games as well as PS1 titles and play them on your phone (and they’ll also work on the NGP, so yay). PlayStation announced that some phones will become “PlayStation Certified,” meaning that Suite titles will play on them. So, not every Android phone (running 2.3 or better) is automatically good to go. Naturally, Sony’s own phone will make the cut. Sony is also rolling out a new development environment for new games.

…what’s a 3DS again? Seriously, though – this will probably be perfect for hardcore handheld players. Cell phones and the iPod Touch get the really casual market…what does the 3DS get? Kids? Kids love gimmicky things, right?

Ever wanted some primo downloadable content, but you’ve only got cash? Okay, if you’ve managed to make it over the age of [...]

I try to break out the happy PSN logo whenever possible.

Ever wanted some primo downloadable content, but you’ve only got cash? Okay, if you’ve managed to make it over the age of 18, that’s probably not so much of a problem – you’ve got a credit card, debit card, something. But if you’re a kid or you don’t even know about DLC’s existence – hey, those folks are out there – GameStop is ready to help you out.

Since some customers aren’t aware of add-on content, GameStop’s new partnership will allow customers to explore the DLC available for popular titles and buy it right there in the store (and online, starting next week). The best part about this is that they’ll accept anything GameStop considers a form of currency – yeah, including game trades. And, according to GameStop President Tony Bartel, it’ll make an excellent holiday gift:

“DLC content, which typically costs between $10 and $15, also makes terrific holiday gifts for gamers who enjoy playing titles with available add-on content,” he said in a press release. “To make this work, we partnered very closely with Microsoft and Sony to link our point of sale directly into their systems in order to provide customers with instantaneous access to the DLC they wish to purchase. We anticipate we’ll complete the nationwide rollout of Sony DLC within a few short weeks in order to service customers during the busy holiday shopping season.”

That sounds like a couple of things: First, it means that maybe they’ll end up doing this with Xbox games as well. Second, I’ll be actually able to ask my mom for DLC for Christmas. Sounds like a win-win.

So, next time you want an add-on for a game, you can use some game you don’t like so much to get it (assuming the value holds up, anyway). Or cash. Cash works, too.
