Sneak in the shadows and stalk potential suspects as Wei Shen, an undercover cop, tries to dismantle a criminal organization—the Hong Kong Triads.

Sleeping Dogs offers shoot-outs at every corner of the city adorned in neon lights bordering the streets. Guns aren’t the only method of combat. Get up close and pound enemies with martial arts and objects found in the city.

The United Front Games and Square Enix game is an open-world cop drama that will be released later this year for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.

“Working on Sleeping Dogs has been such a huge passion for the team at United Front Games and we’re really pleased to be working with Square Enix London Studios,” said Stephen Van Der Mescht, Executive Producer at United Front Games. “The extensive experience both our studios have in creating compelling openworld gameplay and rich and rewarding combat makes for a perfect partnership. Working together we can make sure that Sleeping Dogs is the most intense and immersive experience it can be.”

Does this game look a little familar? It should. After Activision canned True Crime: Hong Kong last year, Square Enix picked up the game…but not the IP rights. Oops? Not really — Square Enix was basically just forced to rebrand the entire thing, and Sleeping Dogs is the result.

Here’s a trailer to get your feet wet.

In this week’s edition of “Oh, hey, I didn’t expect that (even though I should’ve),” we have Battleship, coming from a partnership between Activision and Hasbro. And so a video game based on a movie based on a board game is a thing that is actually happening. Though you shouldn’t try to say that three times fast.

…yep.

“We’re geared up for an outrageous sea and land conflict with the all new BATTLESHIP videogame,” said David Oxford, Activision Publishing. “Inspired by the film’s exciting action and stunning backdrop, the game is next-gen naval warfare that thrusts players into the middle of humanity’s last stand against an unfamiliar menace.”

I…have never thought about next-gen naval warfare while trying to figure out which coordinates that stupid, tiny destroyer floated on. I also missed the part where the original Battleship had land warfare. I also always knew who I was making my last stand against. (It was my mother, and she had a knack for taking me down quickly.) I have also never put characters on my boats (mostly because they were too tiny and I didn’t miss the part where it was a board game). But this has not stopped Double Helix, who are developing the game for Activision.

In Battleship, you’ll play as demolitions specialist Cole Mathis (who, I’m betting, is going to sink a battleship! Teehee!), who is essentially stuck in a deserted land and sea area where his cell phone doesn’t work. Well, okay, it’s Hawaii. Also, considering that I once had a boyfriend call me from the top of a volcano in Hawaii, I’m not quite understanding this “dead zone” thing. But I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he has Sprint or something.

Anywho, the game somehow combines first-person shootery goodness with naval strategy simulation, so it’s Call of Duty meets…well, the board game. The key word is “somehow.” You’ll command frigates, cruisers, destroyers, submarines and…well, a very surprising last ship — the USS Missouri battleship.

Why so surprising? Well, the USS Missouri is a museum. So, I’d imagine that makes it very easy for the enemy to find — just go to Pearl Harbor. It’s kind of just…there. And it has a P.O. Box and everything. Easy!

Battleship arrives in Europe this April, followed by North America in May. It’ll be available for PS3 and Xbox 360 with special versions available for Wii, Nintendo DS and 3DS.

Here’s a trailer chock-full of “Not actual game footage.”

SEGA officially announced the second episode of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 today, which will be released sometime during the 2012 that is rapidly speeding toward us (much like Sonic himself). In addition to Microsoft and Sony’s online stores, Episode II will come to Apple’s App Store, the Android Market and Windows Phone 7′s iteration of Xbox LIVE.

The physics engine has been reworked from the ground up, and new character animations have been added. Speaking of things that are new — Tails is making an appearance (finally).

“After twenty years in action, it’s clear that Sonic hasn’t slowed down one bit,” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “The first entry in the Sonic 4 saga was a major success. We’ve listened to the fans and been hard at work making sure we recapture that same spirit of fun in Episode II. We hope the fans will enjoy it.”

Check out the teaser trailer here:

See, Vita’s like a tiny PlayStation, and RC cars are just tiny cars, so…of course it makes sense.

The game features renditions of all four worlds in the series along with eight previously-featured vehicle classes.

What’s definitely awesome is that this game will be available as both a PSN download for PS3 and a Vita title — and the two will play nice together.

Game Director Paul Rustchynsky said on PlayStation.Blog that “[i]t’s the same experience on both PS3 and PS Vita, and picking up the game on PS3 will give you full access to the game on PS Vita (and vice versa) – so if you own both you can carry your progress between the two, and always pick up where you left off.”

Neat stuff! Is this something you’ll pick up at Vita’s launch? Take a look at the first-ever trailer for the game below:

PDP (Performace Design Products) has created a headset and controller that would make any Call of Duty fan jump for joy. PDP has created Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 branded wireless controller for the Playstations 3 and a Call of Duty: Black Ops branded wireless headset for the Wii.

To begin with, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Collectors Edition controller for the Playstation 3. Would be
considered one stylish controller. This controller features analog sticks which are concave and a D-Pad which is fully functional. The style is much like the “old school” D-pads, of earlier controller of the gaming era. Not only are the gamin button features there, the style is beautiful with the black and carbon colouring, grips on the handles, and the “night vision” green glow of the MW3 logo. The controller retails for 49.99.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Collectors Edition wireless headset for the Wii is another addition to the gaming gear spectrum. This is a sleek and sexy looking black headset with the Call of Duty logo on the ear piece. The headset is suppose to provide clear sound, for while you are playing these first person shooters. The headset also works with both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The newest addition to the bundlesphere includes a 3D copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, a PS3 system (obviously), and vouchers to download the first two movies in the Harry Potter series.

This new focus on 3D in a bundle is nicely-timed, given that Sony recently released its new PlayStation-branded 3D display on November 13.

On an official PlayStation-related article from Sony, the console-maker noted that 2012 release BioShock Infinite will get its own special Move peripheral. [...]

On an official PlayStation-related article from Sony, the console-maker noted that 2012 release BioShock Infinite will get its own special Move peripheral.

Of course, this note didn’t stay up on the site long — here’s the current incarnation — but Videogamer managed to snag the interesting part of the original text:

A special PS Move peripheral is being produced that will draw you even deeper into this stunning vision of a parallel future.

Of course, the bigger question here is…well, what on Earth (or off Earth also works in this case, I suppose) is the peripheral for Move going to represent? Guns have been done to death, but that’s the likely end result here. I guess an older gun that Booker uses would be cool enough, right?

BioShock Infinite‘s Move integration isn’t a secret — Ken Levine himself announced the game’s support during E3 2011.

The game currently has no release date outside the very vague “2012.”

Set in an ancient world with a very anime-esque design, the game chronicles the story of Asura. Once a powerful deity, he was betrayed and stripped of his powers by the other gods. Filled with anger over the betrayal, he swears revenge and to resuce his daughter from the seven gods who usurped his own. And the only way he is able to fight back after losing his godly powers is by using his rage.

It reminded me a lot of God of War. Once powerful, loses power and swears revenge? Check. Very angry over his situation? Check. Shirtless? Check. Is all of this necessarily a bad thing? Not really. The basic story hearkens back to that of Kratos’s, however that kind of tale can be found in several heroic stories from various cultures.

Gameplay wise, it went smoothly once I became familiar with the controls. They are similar to those of God of War in the sense that you’re given button prompts, but that’s about it for similarities. And the boss I had to face? Pretty big bordering on epic. Not only did I have to fight him through several stages, but in the last stage he grows to a size that dwarfs the planet that Asura is on and turns into a god that reminded me of Hindu gods.

All in all the game has some promise but I would want to see more of it before making a final decision.

Not long ago, I was able to get the chance to check out a new game from Deep Silver: Winter Stars. It’s a Winter Sports game that uses the motion controls of the Wii, PS3 and Kinect in order to play. Yes, it’s another motion sports game, but bear with me here as it is a bit different and can bring some new things to the table.

Winter Stars has a legitimate campaign mode where you can level up and earn skill points to put into your character’s gear and equipment for the sports you participate in. And the game offers quite a few: Para skiing, Curling, Skidoo, Bobsled, Downhill Skiing, Figure Skating, Biathlon, Ski Alpine Freeride, Snowboard Cross, Ski Jumping and Speed Skating.

Watching the game demo, the controls seemed pretty responsive on the Kinect, and it looked pretty fun. I even got to watch a multiplayer race with downhill skiing. The game itself offers local and online coop gameplay for 2-4 players. That plus graphics are are more realistic and not based on a console’s avatars is refreshing to me. It’s also quite scenic and will feature 18 different locations in the final game.

All in all if you’re a fan of these party style games, this may be another one to look out for. It even stands out with a seemingly robust singleplayer campaign that can keep you playing on your own. Winter Stars is set to triple-axel it’s way into stores in late 2011.

Konami announced today that there will be a “Limited Edition” version of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection available this winter for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The “Limited Edition” will include the game in specialized packaging and a 248-page artbook conveniently titled “The Art of Metal Gear Solid.” Kind of huge. The book, I mean.

The game’s features (whether you go limited edition or not) include:

Remastered from the ground up for PS3 & Xbox 360

Stunning 1080p graphics

60 frames-per-second graphics

Icons, sound effects, and all fonts upgraded for HD

User interface rebalanced for HD

Added right analog stick input and force feedback

Features Trophies on PS3 and Achievements on Xbox 360

Worldwide matchmaking for multiplayer (tentative)

Transfarring (save data sharing) compatible with PSP version (and, I assume, the PS Vita version, when that’s out)
