Even though it seems like a clone of Mario Kart, Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing is a fun game with a great Sega nostalga aspect.

Rating: E for Everyone
Players: 1-4
Genre: Racing
Publisher: Sega
Developers: Sumo Digital
Release Date: February 23, 2010 (NA)

BUY

Admittedly I was skeptical about Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing at first. However this quickly changed as I started to play the game and got through my first grand-prix. It shows that Sumo Digital really studied the model for Mario Kart. And even though this seems like a clone of that game with different characters, there definitely is more to it than that. The race tracks are beautifully done, and the characters available to play are not only brought to life nicely, but have great themed cars to go with them. I especially liked playing as Shadow the Hedgehog while he rides on a nice black motorcycle.

The racing environments are done quite well, bringing you the feel of each the characters and games featured. As you earn Sega Miles, you can spend them to unlock more music tracks to listen to and characters to play. From this point on, you’ll start to see all of the similarities between Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing and Mario Kart. As you race down the tracks, you can pick up power ups or weapons just like in Mario Kart. They are a bit different to fit the Sega universe, such as instead of picking up bananas you pick up traffic cones. Each character is also able to pick up an item that lets them gives a special ability to use: for Sonic it’s the ability for him to turn into Super Sonic and passing everyone by, or a more interesting one with Aiai where he shakes his maracas and makes those he passes join in a congo line. Controls for the game are pretty easy to pick up, and there’s even a tutorial to help you figure them out. I was actually able to pick up on how to drift better in this game than in Mario Kart. This is really helpful as drifting is a big part of the game, especially online, if you want a little edge to increase your chances of winning.

It’s pretty easy to get caught up in completing the varying Grand Prix difficulties to earn more miles, and the challenge modes are fun and have some interesting goals to beat. But, I also enjoyed the online play. You can play with friends or join a random race with others. You’re also able to play various modes like King of the Hill, which can honestly be hit or miss depending on who you’re playing with. But all in all when I sat down to initially play for about a half hour, I spent more like two hours racing both against the AI as well as on Xbox Live.

My only complaint with the game is the announcer. His constant interjections really begin to grate on you after a couple of races. And for some reason he hates Ulala. When racing as her, I was treated to every dig against women drivers that I could remember as well as insults to her intelligence. I never had any kind of insults thrown at me when I played as Shadow the Hedgehog or Beat (Jet Set Radio). It really struck me as weird that they would make the announcer so vehemently insulting to a female character like Ulala. Generally though I wish they would have nixed the announcer except for maybe the start and end of a race.

But still I suggest picking up this game. It’s really fun, especially for playing with friends, and this is also a great buy if you love getting achievements to bump up your gamerscore!

Release Date: Oct 27, 2009
Rating: Buy/Rent

Official Forza Website

So many people think that racing simulations are all the same. Driving cars around the tracks, modifying them, “pimping” them out to become beasts on the road. Well, for the most part, they are right.

Like previous games in the series, Forza Motorsport 3 offers racers the chance to drive world class circuits from the comfort of their couch. Races available to you depend on the types of cars you have in your garage. European, Asian and North American cars of all drive types can be accessed, souped up and shown off in any series your cars qualify for. For the purposes of this review, and personal preference in general, I started my career in Forza 3 with a Honda Fit. Not the type of car I would ever drive should I race in real life (granted, I can’t drive period – seriously, all I have is a learner’s permit!), but from the selection of cars I had to choose from, it was the one I felt most comfortable starting with.

I began Year One on the circuit with my little blue Fit partaking in events that spanned 3 races in length. Together we zipped around the courses, rear-ending quite a few people on the way. I proudly completed many races in first place, earning bonus cars at the end of the third event and discounts from manufacturers on parts for my vehicles. Every other Saturday afternoon I found my calendar booked with a World Championship event. Since most of these are E class events and my Fit has been upgraded, I hop into the Alfa Romeo Brera I won and compete using it. These Saturday drives are a bit longer than the average track, adding more length and laps than I would see during a typical circuit.

A new feature added to Forza 3 is the Rewind Button. While you are racing, if you bump a car or end up with a tire or two in the grass, you can hit the Back Button to rewind the race. While I suppose this feature is handy for people becoming familiar with the game. Otherwise, Rewind comes across as cheating. Didn’t like that you lost 3 seconds getting back on the track? Rewind! I used it once to test out the feature for this review and I already know I will never use it again. I also hope this feature is one that never makes it into a 4th installment in the franchise.

Forza 3 boasts a huge catalog of cars and tracks; so large that the game comes with a second disc full of content for you to install on your hard drive and access using Disc 1 as the main play disc. Sadly for this review I am unable to comment much on the additional cars and tracks as I have no room on my hard drive left to install the content. I did download the free content that came in the form of a MS code and pick up the free Hyundai Car Pack to add to my garage.

Achievements are fairly easy to come by in the beginning. For every level your car & driver reach between 1-10 you will unlock a small bit of Gamerscore, after which you gain achievements on every fifth increment. Completing a race season (Years 1-6) gives you a more modest amount. Snapping pictures, creating videos and selling items from your Storefront will also net you some achievements.

Another highlight for me is the realistic damage your car takes when you rear-end other cars or get nudged off the track. To me, its not a race if my car doesn’t get a few scratches or loses a bumper somewhere on the course. Just a reason why I have always preferred Forza to Gran Turismo titles. (That and the fact that I despise the License System in Gran Turismo.)

I also want to give a big shout out to PBTurbo Tuning for creating such an awesome car for me. When I approached a friend of mine whom I recalled did paint jobs for Forza 2 cars, I discovered that he had joined a Forza garage. These garages will tune and paint your cars for you if you aren’t talented enough to do it yourself. Their shop offers tuning starting around 8000 in-game credits and painting starting around 10000 in-game credits. You can purchase the GamingAngels car for the Nissan 370 skin for 10,000 Credits. The tuning is another 10,000 Credits.

Overall Opinion:

I have always enjoyed the Forza franchise. Other than updated graphics and more car customization, I haven’t felt much of a difference over Forza 2. The Rewind option is just cheating, in this reviewer’s opinion, and should not be part of the game. I seem to have access to a decent amount of cars and tracks for someone with no room to install the extra content, which makes me believe that there is a wonderful collection of sweet rides to be had for racing enthusiasts. If I was big into racing games, I would have bought this Day One. Since I am more of a casual racer, I would have eventually purchased it, but only after other titles that also hit within the two months prior to the holiday shopping season.

BUY

Need For Speed is a hit franchise better known for it’s street racing-police chasing shenanigans, but EA’s new Need For Speed: Shift is a hair pin turn in a totally different direction! Fans will remember their last title, Need For Speed: Pro Street, concentrating on track racing with street cars; well Shift takes the franchise to the track once again. Instead of climbing a black list, you’ll be competing in a series of track races and climbing the Tiers to get to the “Need For Speed World Tour”.

So what’s new? Shift has found several ways to engage their fans with new cars (nearly 70), new tracks (over 15), several new race types, an insightful way of leveling up, and what the developers call “True Driver’s Experience”.

Starting off in the game, you are welcome to a pretty good selection of cars in the Tier 1 group. 22 to be exact! The best cars you’ll find in Tier 1 are the BMWs and Audis for their horse power, and ability to contend with cars in Tier 2 races. Tier 2 isn’t lacking either with a hefty selection of M Series BMWs, your choice of the EVO 9 and EVO 10, and a Lotus Elise (which is surprisingly slow even after the highest upgrades). Tier 3 and 4 is a smorgasbord of Porsche, Lamborghinis, Mercedes, and lots of exotic German and Italian luxury sports cars. The C6 Z06, Audi R8 TDI, and Nissan GT-R SpecV are some of the best in show for Tier 3. As for Tier 4, it’s a very close match up between the $1.2 million Bugatti Veyron, and the $1.1 million Pagani Zonda R. Both have maxed out acceleration and the Veyron has the upper hand in top speed, but it’s the Zonda that may take the cake of “best car in the game” with maxed out handling, great breaking, and a top speed that’s not lacking either. This series has arrived in a totally different class than it’s previous titles, and it definitely shows with the cars!

All cars are upgradeable through the game’s pre-set stage and body kits. These kits make your car faster, lighter, and more aerodynamic. On the upside having only one kit to chose from makes for easy and quick shopping for gamers unwilling to mess around in a virtual car parts store, but for others having no choice is a bad trade-off. Unfortunately, if you care about your car’s look, you will eventually have to make the choice of whether or not you want to throw a large wing or wide body kit on your car to make it better, or keep your car’s nice clean look. Adding on to the inconvenience, trying to see said body kits in the upgrades preview window may be a tad bit difficult with all the menu screens in front of your car. Good thing if you sell your car you’ll get all your money back (including upgrades) if you don’t like it!

As for tracks, you will be swerving around on some actual real world renditions, like Laguna Seca and Road America, as well as some that NFSS threw in of their own to test you, like downtown Tokyo, scenic London River, and insane Hazyview Eight! There’s 18 tracks with over 50 different renditions, making your selection seem endless! In Quick Race and online, you can even chose the time of day- dusk, dawn, or midday- for your track!

There’s several different race types in the game that can retain even the most ADD gamers’ attention! Surprisingly, you won’t even get to drive your own car in a great deal of them! For example, in the Manufacturer’s Competition every driver will be put in the exact same car; with an even playing field, it will take some skill to come in first. In Car Battles, you will get the choice of driving one of two rival cars and duke it out in a game of Leader and Follower. This race is best out of 3; in the first 2 races each driver will take turns starting in front. The driver that finishes first or takes a 5 second lead wins. If a winner isn’t determined by the second race, the third race will start the drivers side by side, the rules to winning the race are the same- cross the finish line first or gain a 5 second lead.

Though most race types are fun and engaging, there’s one that may send some controllers flying into the wall, and that one is Drifting! This is another race type that gives you a loner car to drive, but the car they give you seem to be tweaked to fly into walls at the tap of the joystick. Of course the directions are simple: insanely throw your car around a curb, use your handbrake to control speed, and whip your steering wheel in the opposite direction to control your angle! But, NO! The game says this is wrong, and insists on every slight movement sending your car in the opposite direction. Of course you can get used to these mechanics, but that’s if you haven’t already given up on trying. Yet and still, this one race type doesn’t detract from the other events like Time Attack and Eliminator races that keep the game challenging , yet enjoyable!

Don’t think NFS has gone completely soft. Though Shift has gone all simulator on us, the game doesn’t just shine the light on safe driving. Shift has a leveling system that rewards drivers for their Precision and Aggression. You’ll get points for staying on track, mastering corners, and politely passing other drivers as well as spinning your opponents out into the gravel! Everything you do on the track is reflected in your Driver Profile and reflected in your emblem that evolves as your level increases. This is a direct representation of your driving style, which will show to anyone you play online.

Every race has specific challenges to complete, similar to “milestones” in Need For Speed: Most Wanted; complete the objectives, and earn stars which help unlock higher Tiers for advancement of your career. These challenges keep the races fun, and keeps Shift from being just an ordinary, mundane racing simulator. Some of the stars are down right difficult to achieve, so there will be many-a-time gamers will go back to Tiers trying to acquire their long lost gold stamp of approval. Along with points, you will also earn badges, which are in game rewards for miscellaneous achievements around the track. After every level gained, up until Shift’s level 50 cap, you will earn sponsorship cash, unlock several goodies like cars, garage slots, and vinyls to customize your car; and get invited to higher tier events where you’ll be able to drive cars you can’t even afford yet!

The best feature on Need For Speed: Shift is what the developers call “True Driver’s Experience”. The developers at Slightly Mad Studios wanted to create a simulator that virtually makes the players feel like they’re in the seat of a race car going 150mph. From the moment you press the gas petal and take off in a race, the inside of your cockpit becomes blurry, creating a feeling of tunnel vision. The blur of scenes around the track as you accelerate give you the feeling of a race car driver being stuck to their seat from G-forces! Experienced best from the incredible inside-view, every bump and thud and ram is made even more intense when you crash! The moment your car smashes into an object, you’re immediately thrown into a daze, your breath gets heavy, your eyes can’t focus and the world around you is fuzzy until you regain your bearings and get back on track. Slightly Mad Studios definitely gave this new effect the right name! The “True Driver’s Experience” is what really puts this game on the map to be recognized as a racing simulator, and not just a racing game.

All that’s good, but how’s the game online? Multiplayer was surprisingly entertaining, and a much needed diversion when you get tired of playing AI. Unlike some games, Need For Speed: Shift’s matchmaking doesn’t differentiate between a player’s level, so you may wind up in a game lobby of players ranging from 11 to 50. With this game being so popular, for a good reason, it’s pretty easy joining and hosting matches; the game menu is simple and straight forward as well. There’s two modes in multiplayer, Versus and Driver Duel. You have access to the maps you’ve unlocked through Career mode, and the choices of racing, drifting, and even time attack in Versus. You aren’t earning stars during these races, but if you end up on the podium, you will earn cash! If you go to Driver Duel, you will be in a 1v1 match of Leader and Follower, but unlike Car Battles, you both will be driving the same randomly selected cars and working your way up several stages in a ladder to win the Championship. If you were worried about lag, rest assured that in most matches, it wasn’t even noticeable!

Overall the Need For Speed series has come a tremendous way by making this game! Need for Speed: Shift is both in-depth and fun for all levels of gamers, and has brought to the table a new and exciting experience that is unmatched by any other racing game out there! By reinventing themselves, but managing to keep to their roots, Need For Speed has created yet another favorite that fans and new comers alike will be playing for a long time!

Thursday I was able to go and check out Need for Speed: Shift at BLVD in Manhattan. I’m not always one for racing games, but playing Shift and seeing the new areas that they’re taking this game into got me intrigued with the game. The most interesting part for me with Shift was the addition of a driver’s profile that will give you a unique persona based on your play style and skill. This will also affect how you unlock cars as well as career progression and online play. Meaning that if I want to play online matchmaking, I can play with drivers of the same skill level as myself who could also be more on the destructive side (what can I say, I like crashing through barrels).

It was really fun to listen about and experience the new crash mechanics that are in Shift. Slightly Mad Studios had professional racers come in to help work on the development of Shift and the new crash mechanics, which really throw you for a loop as your vision goes hazy and the camera shakes. Another aspect I enjoyed was the realistic cockpit view as well as a view that displayed all of your gages on the screen, as well as the rear view mirror.

Luckily I was able to meet up with one of our winners, KillerviriusB at the event and we got to test out the game together. He seemed to enjoy himself, and at one point we were both trying to see how much it took before we could fully destroy a car. Unfortunately as much as we beat up a car, flames did not sprout up. He said that “the turning was a bit difficult to adjust to, but the game had a really good sence of speed,” and that he really enjoyed the opportunity to come out and play the game!

CNET has put up a live video of a recent visit from Microsoft with Project Natal.

In the demo they show that gamers can easily jump in and play a racing game, like Burnout Paradise. The controls are hands up as is they are on a steering wheel and foot on pedal for gas.

It’s funny that the first thing I noticed about the video is that Kudo Tsunoda has eyes! Cnet actually caught him on video without his sunglasses! Kudo Tsunoda is the creative director for Project Natal if you didn’t know.

Enjoy the video:

At EA3, the E3 preview event, I spent some time playing Need for Speed Nitro on the Wii. Some of you may know, but I am pretty bad at racing games. My favorite racing game is the older Burnout titles because it was good to crash into things. Something I do very well. I warned the guy at the Need for Speed Nitro demo that about my lack of skill with racing games and went for it.

The first thing you will notice is that Need for Speed Nitro is really about speed. The team wanted to make sure it felt “fast” and they accomplished that. The nitrous gives you a burst of speed for racing through the streets.

For those that do crash, the car will show various levels of damage. Glass will break, or steam will start coming out of the car. Pick up wrenches along the way to fix the damage.

There isn’t a story to follow in Need for Speed Nitro, instead the game has a variety of challenges. There is no online multiplayer but you can race against others locally.

What stands out about Need for Speed Nitro is the control scheme. The controls are easy to learn and even easier to remember. Racing can be done with a Wii-mote or using the Wii Wheel. I enjoyed playing Need for Speed Nitro and can’t wait to get another hands-on at E3.

New from Vector Entertainment and MCS Games, Vector City Racers is a fun, casual multiplayer online game for kids (moms and kids at heart, this means you, too!). Vector City Racers is the first browser-based massively multiplayer online game (MMO) to offer real-time 3D action using Flash 10 technology and can be played for free – with no download required!

“Vector City Racers empowers kids to create their own unique racer vehicles in a world that offers both social activities and achievement-based gaming,” said Chris Bergstresser, CEO, Vector Entertainment. “The open beta offers more features and more opportunity for massive fun.”

In Vector City Racers, each child’s self-designed, one-of-a-kind racer vehicle is their avatar. The game environment is comprised of shapes and structures, running directly in the browser. The open beta invites everyone to come and explore Vector City, where all roads lead to fun.

To go with the open beta launch, Vector Entertainment invites all racing and gaming fans to design and submit a vehicle using the ModShop easy-to-use online design tool. This is fun for everyone! Create shapes and sizes for every aspect of the car, then see it from all angles, paint it up, and race it off!

The grand-prize winner will receive roundtrip air travel and tickets to their choice of one of four national racing spectator events. Additionally, the winner’s submitted vehicle will become one of the official starter vehicles for Vector City Racers. The Fastest Road to Fun Contest begins on May 18, 2009 and ends on July 20, 2009. The winner will be chosen and announced on July 27, 2009.

So check out
Vector City Racers
for more details!

I have to be honest. I’m not a big fan of racing games; the only games I like that are similar are the SSX line of snowboarding games. I wasn’t always this way, back in the day, I was a huge fan of the Road Rash series by EA. But through the years, I just haven’t been a big fan of racing games, although occasionally I see the appeal. I did my best going into NFS: PS to be objective to the genre as a whole, and I think it paid off.

Graphics:
Beautiful. Seriously, this game has graphics that I would expect from cut scenes in an RPG. It’s not like this throughout all the different parts of the game; I’d say the garage itself where you can customize your cars isn’t as detailed or smooth. However, the graphics for the races themselves, and the opening sequences as the cars line up for a race are really beautiful.

Controls:
Normally these days, the only racing games I play are in the arcade. So I’m used to a wheel that swings left and right, and not always with a lot of control. Using an Xbox controller makes it feel like I have more control over my car and where it’s going. And I’m one of those racers who just puts the gas on and barrels through a course, none too delicately. That’s really easy to do here, and still keep control of your car, which is nice. But, there’s also more room for sophistication, if you want to keep a handle on how you take the turns.

Sound:
There’s a lot of hip-hop style music between races, which isn’t too loud or too repetitive to become obnoxious, and honestly, I didn’t really notice it most of the time. The only noise I got really tired of was the announcer’s voice, because there weren’t a lot of different lines for him to deliver during a race.

Flow:
There’s a map that shows you how the races are going to progress. And while the races do start to ratchet up as you make your way through the different places, the map is a pain to follow. It’s far too graphic to be helpful, and I often had to study it for far too long to figure out if I’d already done a race or not.

Fun Factor:
Even for a non-racing game person like me, there’s a lot of fun to be had for a competitive spirit. I definitely felt like I wanted to keep going to get the best scores, the best times in a race, or on a race day.

Is there a female playable character?
This is the one big disappointment for me. As much customization as you can do of your car, there’s absolutely no character customization. You play Ryan Cooper, newcomer to the scene, but there’s no option for changing that at all. At the very least, I would’ve liked to see a female option, even if there wasn’t any further customization.

Replay Value:
If you like racing games, this game will hold a lot of replay-ability. Theres just so much to do, and a lot of ways to win a race, that makes it easy to go back to win in other areas. If you’re not a fan of the racing genre, you may just want to make your way through the battle map and be done with it, but it’s still worth a little time.
