    Review: Breath of Death VII

Rating: N/A Genre: RPG indie Publisher: Steam and XBLA Developer: Zeboyd Games Release Date: July 13, 2011 Zeboyd game’s first title was “Breath of Death VII.” A parody of RPG games, with a retro style and various fun elements and humor. Breath of Death VII starts with an atomic weapon detonating in a desperate attempt to end the war, causing all life to be wiped out across the world.  But not all was lost, as an undead civilization began to prosper evil in their midst and it was up to four brave heroes to rid the land of evil. The game starts in a dungeon where quickly you learn how to move your character.  Yet Zeboyd games were clever in the introduction of the controls, as they flash a photo of an Xbox controller showing you that is available for the Xbox Live indie Arcade. To be fair, Breath of

    Review: BPAL RPG Scents

I am perfectly happy to admit that I was, and occasionally still am, a table-top role player. I spent many a pre-teen and teen afternoon and evening in the company of rogues, thieves, wizards, orcs, and elves. My preferred character was a half-elf Witch/Duellist, and we played by the AD&D first gen rules, thank you very much, often supplemented by whatever the Dungeon Master had read in Dragon that month. So when I heard that Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab was putting out a line of perfumes based on classic role playing, I knew I had to get my hands on a set. I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to smell like damp concrete, leather jackets, old paper and Jolt cola, mind you, but I figured it was well worth a try. The RPG line consists of three categories — Race, Class, Alignment — with a variety of scents in each

    Review: Two Worlds II (PS3)

Rating: M (for Mature) Genre: Role Playing Publisher: South Peak Games Developer: Topware Interactive Release Date: January 25, 2011 RENT Unexpectedly Two Worlds was an engaging and enjoyable RPG. Even though you could not play as a female avatar, it did well enough for what it was. As RPG’s go many people have distinct favorites. This game isn’t going to be replacing any mega hit JRPG’s anytime soon. But like that secondary anime that you watch in between episodes of your favorite, this game’s few flaws aren’t bad enough to prevent you from wasting some time on it. With a Gandalf clone named Gandahar as the villain, although it seems very LOTR-esque in some ways, the story does have a female at the center of the plot. The main character’s sister has been abducted and an evil sorcerer who held your character captive as well, is extracting her magical mana

E3 First Look – Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

The game that surprised me the most this year at E3 was Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning from 38 Studios. I’d only heard very little about the game before going to the event and wasn’t expecting to see much from it there. But we got the opportunity to see the demo presentation while at the EA booth and I was impressed by what we saw. Reckoning is an open world single player RPG set in a high fantasy world created by famous author R.A. Salvatore with art design by Todd McFarlane. The big names involved with the project don’t end there though. Lead designer on the game is Ken Rolston, creator of Morrowind and Oblivion. In a year full of sequels it was nice to see an original, new IP for once at E3. The core game has four very customizable player races and three class trees that each have 22

E3 First Look: Mass Effect 3

Shepard is back and everything is just as we left it at the end of Mass Effect 2.  The designs of the levels are faithful to the previous games and it gives it a sense that we had never left.  The graphics at the time of this demo are similar to what we’ve seen before – not a lot of improvement.  It makes me wonder if this was this an artistic choice, a fact that is a demo, or that we where viewing it on a huge TV that allowed us to see every defect up close?  That’s yet to be determined.  We saw breaks in the skin mapping that caused back lighting to come through the character as well as jagged edges and pixilation.  I know I’m being picky about the graphics, but Mass Effect is one of those games that we expect to look as polished as possible, so
