Special edition of ‘Max Payne 3’ is downright statuesque

Rockstar Games announced an official special edition of Max Payne 3 that is only available for pre-order on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC from today until January 15, 2012. (When’s the game out? March 2012. So this is the definition of planning ahead.) For a hundred bucks, you get: A copy of the game A 10″ tall statue of Max Payne from TriForce A series of still life art prints “that depict some of Max Payne’s inner demons and vices” A bullet keychain with a screw-off back A multiplayer character pack with 8 characters A multiplayer weapons pack (including an automatic shotgun, Molotov cocktails and more) The game’s soundtrack Yeah, it’s $100, but it looks like you get quite a bit for that extra $40. What do special editions need to get you to order them this far in advance? Follow

Sony releases special edition, Move-bundled ‘LittleBigPlanet 2’

If you didn’t get in on the LittleBigPlanet 2 action the first time around (for shame!), Sony and Media Molecule are releasing a special edition of the game, which includes the special PlayStation Move content “Rise of the Cakeling” as well as branded level and costume packs. The new special edition will be available November 15. On that same day, they’re also releasing a special Move bundle including the game (something that probably should have happened a lot earlier). The game by itself is currently slated to sell for $59.99, with the bundle going for $129.99. Follow

‘The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’ gets an anniversary edition, saves you $10 on Skyrim

Usually, we’re celebrating anniversaries when the numbers are a little larger, but I think this 5th Anniversary Edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will make a few people happy…if only because it helps you save on a copy of the fifth entry in the series, Skyrim. This special edition for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, which will retail for $29.99, includes a copy of the game as well as the “Knights of the Nine” and “Shivering Isles” expansions. In addition, North American consumers will also get a special Steelbook for storage, a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the game and a full-color map. And oh yeah — that $10 Skyrim coupon. (Looks like you also have to get the strategy guide to get that deal, but based on this “300 hours” number I keep hearing bandied about…you might need it. Perhaps not such a good deal after

“Bulletstorm” Epic Edition gives you access to the “Gears of War 3” beta

Epic Games, People Can Fly, EA and Microsoft announced today that Bulletstorm‘s “Epic Edition” on Xbox 360 will feature early beta access for Gears of War 3. (The price is the same as a new game  – $59.99 – so this is probably just a shinier box.) In addition to beta access, this edition provides extra in-game content while playing Bulletstorm, specifically more experience and visual upgrades. The rest appears to be part of the regular game, in which you are encouraged to “kill with skill,” in case you forgot that. Bulletstorm will be available on February 22, 2011 in North America, and February 25, 2011 in Europe. Follow

Ubisoft reveals “Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood” Collector’s Edition

Having a fantabulous Collector’s Edition for a sequel seems to be a rite of passage these days. We’ve seen our fair share of them this year. Gone are the days of only adding a metal case and a soundtrack disc to a Collector’s Edition, this year, it’s all about crazy, limited-edition collectibles. Luckily, we can count Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood among these. Not only does $100 get you a copy of the game and a special bonus disc containing video, the soundtrack and more, but you also get a lovely art book, bonus DLC, and one of two jack-in-the-boxes. If you want the “Harlequin” version, pre-order at GameStop, but everyone else that pre-orders gets the “Doctor.” It’s worth mentioning that if you’re in Europe, your offer is a little different. The European “Limited Codex Edition,” described here by Joystiq, looks a lot more interesting, but doesn’t offer any harlequins jumping out

“Dead Rising 2” stole office products from your zombie doctor

Dead Rising 2 is special. See, it doesn’t get a “Special Edition.” Everyone gets a Special, Limited, Super-Secret Edition. No, no. Dead Rising 2 gets a “Zombrex Edition,” emblazened with the logo for the medication you’ll be seeing over the course of the entire game. Special pens and notepads are included, and that makes sense – if a drug company developed an anti-zombie medication, you know the drug reps would be promoting it in droves. The contents vary by system, so here’s two full lists of contents: PS3 Dead Rising 2 – Zombrex Edition –    Exclusive Two-Disc Steelbook case includes: –    Dead Rising 2 game disc –    Blu-Ray Disc featuring a High-Definition 24 minute “Making of” featurette –    Complete box contents include: –    Steelbook case (described above) –   Zombrex “Syringe” pen –    Zombrex “Prescription” notepad (25 pages) –    Zombrex “Safety” card –    Zombrex “Prospectus” Sales Brochure (16 pages). –    Dead

Civilization V’s $100 Special Edition adds art and metal

Fans of Sid Meier’s Civilization series should love this one: The latest entry, Civilization V, has added a revolutionary Special Edition to the mix. I don’t mean that in a way that says that the content is any more awesome than the myriad other Special Editions of games on the market, but it’s more…the décor. Even if the art isn’t final, it looks a lot like it’s designed to invoke the Industrial Revolution, doesn’t it? (Or is it just me?) Included in the $99.99 edition: 5 metal figurines based on units from Civilization V, manufactured by Reaper Miniatures 2-disc CD soundtrack of game score selections DVD “Behind-the-Scenes at Firaxis on Civilization V” 176-page hardcover art book Will you be picking this one up? Or have the Special Editions gone too far? Follow
