“With the tenth anniversary of the series on the horizon, the current Kingdom Hearts saga is approaching its climactic conclusion,” said Tetsuya Nomura, director of the game. “The story of this game will serve as the opening chapter of the final conflict, and, as always, will be full of surprises. In order to best implement this element of surprise and discover new realms of possibility, we have chosen Nintendo 3DS as our platform. With its revolutionary new game system, this title will not only be a bold, exhilarating tale of adventure, but also a first look into the future form of the KINGDOM HEARTS series.”

In the game, King Mickey and Yen Sid put Sora and Riku through the Mark of Mastery exam, which, if they pass, means that they’re true Keyblade masters. (You’d think after so many games, they’d be masters, but apparently there is an exam. Okay.)

A trailer that’ll take you eight minutes to watch has been released. For subtitles, click on through to the actual video’s page, where an incredibly sweet person has already done the work.

The game’s latest trailer confirms that the paradigms are definitely back, even if you are only playing as Serah and Noel.

There is something new, however — what basically amounts to very, very pretty Quick Time Events. So, if those are more up your alley, maybe you get to feel a little bit better. Take a look:

The Eidos studio is best known for Deus Ex: Human Revolution at the moment, and the expansion will add another 100 jobs to the company, which will be working on both Deus Ex and Thief games at the facility as well as a third AAA-level project.

Square Enix Montréal will add another 150 jobs when the studio opens in 2012. Current plans have Lee Singleton leading the studio. Singleton is currently general manager of Square Enix in London. This studio will be tasked with creating another game in the Hitman franchise.

“We believe in creating studios where passion for our games and gaming runs throughout and Eidos-Montréal is testament to this vision,” said Phil Rogers, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Europe. “The start up of a second studio brings a huge advantage to our business; we will nurture two separate studios with their own strengths, culture and appeal. All of this has been made possible by our fantastic partners in Invest Quebec and Montréal International and we look forward to continuing our excellent working relationship with them.”

First, Chrono Cross, which is releasing on November 8. The Chrono Trigger sequel has you traveling across dimensions to find the Frozen Flame.

After that, it’s time for Final Fantasy V, releasing November 22. Following that release, Final Fantasy VI comes up to bat on December 6. How chronological, right?

Square-Enix’s Word to your Moogle Tour ended at New York Comic Con this weekend, and I was lucky enough to be in attendance to try out the sequel to 2009′s Final Fantasy XIII. The playable demo available–the same one gamers first saw at E3, is apparently a dated version of the final product we can expect on January 31st. XIII-2 hopes to flesh out the story of the original game, while addressing issues players had with it’s predecessor. The game opens with Serah, Lightning’s younger sister and our new protagonist, Noel battling a monstrous Titan named Atlas. After an intense, but brief bout with him, which utilizes the Paradigm system again, the party winds up in a city, inhabited with quite a few townsfolk and NPCs. One of my personal largest complaints with XIII was the lack of city exploration that gives the game a more humanistic feel, so it was nice to see that our feedback was addressed.

While wandering through the city, one of the first things I noticed was the addition of a Moogle sidekick for the party; which were also conspicuously [mostly] absent in the game’s predecessor, despite being a staple of the series. Moogles are the party’s handy little comrades and will help you get through hidden obstacles to find treasure, while offering tips occasionally as well. I also learned that the game would have quite a bit in common Square-Enix legend, Chrono Trigger, in that it would time travel would be a prominent story element, along with multiple endings depending on the decisions you made throughout the game. Some of these choices are dialogue options you’ll have to make when in a situation; these will usually determine your approach to enemies or conversations with other characters. As mentioned above, time travel is a huge plot element in XIII-2. And it’s implemented quite nicely, with the new addition of mini-games as well. (Something else that was a staple in many Final Fantasy games.) At one point during the demo, Noel and Serah fall into a time flux of sorts, and must solve a puzzle to escape and move on. In short, this was an overhead mini-game in which entailed disappearing floor tiles as you moved across them. The objective was to collect all of the crystals on the way to the finish line, in the correct sequence so you wouldn’t cut yourself off from the goal. I was informed there would be a large variety of mini-games available to the player too, most of which would be available to play at any time during a point in the story, much like the Gold Saucer in Final Fantasy VII.

While fighting my way through the city, I was able to recruit monsters to assist me in battle; Apparently hundreds of different monsters can join you, each with their own job for the Paradigm. You’ll know you’ve gained a new monster when a small crystal appears at the end of a fight; you can then add any monster in your arsenal to your party to suit your needs, each with its own unique abilities. Random encounters have also been brought back, though only to an extent. Enemies will spawn randomly, however you have a set amount of time via the Mog Clock to either engage enemies for a pre-emptive strike or escape the encounter entirely. It’s also possible to gain the aid of NPCs, like soldiers in the area to assist you as well.

When it was finally time to face Atlas again, who had begun to attack the city, I was faced with a choice; Attack him head on, or look for another method of defeating him. I went with the latter, and decided explore a bit to activate a device that would weaken him; apparently the game will be enveloped in choices like this that will impact the outcome of the story and characters, while setting you along a branching path for your ending. While fighting Atlas, I also noticed another new feature in combat; Staggering an enemy will not only weaken them for additional damage, but also trigger a “Cinematic Action” sequence. These are similar to quick time events in games like God of War, but more forgiving and strategic in nature. You can trigger one at the correct time to disable one of Atlas’ hands, which cause the most damage to the party. Paradigm shifting will also be more strategic now as well; rather than changing at one point to meet your needs, players will have to watch the enemy and shift accordingly to its actions. Such as, when Atlas is about to smash the party with his fist, it’s important to switch to a more defensive Paradigm to minimize damage taken.

Overall, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is shaping up beautifully; Many issues gamers had with XIII are being addressed, while fans of the previous installment will get a more fleshed out story and expanded universe to enjoy, with a host of new characters and diverse game play experience as well. FFXIII-2 will be released in December for Japan, and in January stateside. Be sure to check back for our review of the game!

In the game, you command a group of goblins (using all of Vita’s input methods, naturally) to bring the King of Hell back to power.

“We are very excited to have Army Corps of Hell as part of the exclusive launch line-up of the PS Vita system,” said Mona Hamilton, vice president of marketing for Square Enix, Inc. “The team at Entersphere is creating a unique action game that fully embraces the power and controls of the PS Vita system.”

Still no release date for Vita as a whole.

This morning (well, Japan’s morning, anyway) saw quite a bit of interesting news. I’ll hit it in bullet form, if you don’t mind. (My less-than-rudimentary remembrance of college Japanese classes did come in handy.)

Apparently, enough women aren’t playing the 3DS. What do we do to fix that? Release a pink one, of course. It goes on sale in Japan on October 20.

Kid Icarus: Uprising‘s been delayed. Again. What was supposed to be a launch title for the 3DS is now coming out in 2012. Maybe it’s secretly for Wii U.

3D video capture is on the way for the system! Nintendo showed off some very odd video to accompany that. You may be able to superimpose Mii faces on actual people. Yes, it looks as creepy as it sounds. This update, coming in November, also adds additional puzzles to the Mii Plaza. So yes, you do have a reason to start carrying your 3DS with you everywhere once more.

Square Enix is rolling out a game with the actual title Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. This is not a joke. The game does involve using the system’s augmented reality features, and comes with its own AR card, if the video shown following the conference is any indication.

Other titles on the way for 3DS? Animal Crossing, Culdcept, Fire Emblem, Mario Tennis and Paper Mario.

Nintendo of America have confirmed release dates for Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land: Dec. 4 and Nov. 13, respectively.

Monster Hunter TriG is officially official. Know what else is? Monster Hunter 4. The entire country of Japan let out a squeal at that moment, I think. It looks like 4 may be 3DS-exclusive. Check out the trailer:

That weird circle pad add-on has also been priced and dated: 1,500¥ on December 10. The Frankenpad was never mentioned during the conference itself. It is priced to move, however, and several other upcoming games also support it (but don’t require it) — Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D and Resident Evil: Revelations. So, get ready for that thing to come over here to North America — and for a possible fragmentation of 3DS games. The circle pad will also require a single AAA battery, so it won’t add anything to your battery, but it also won’t take away. I guess that’s the least we could ask for.

Feral Interactive announced today that they’re in charge of the Mac release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. This release will be out “this winter,” so either late this year, or early next.

“We are delighted to partner with Feral, a leading expert in development for the Mac platform, to bring the acclaimed Deus Ex: Human Revolution to Mac players, ” said Stephane D’Astous, general manager of Eidos-Montreal. “The game presents a powerful vision of a dystopian future, and we’re excited that gamers will now be able to experience it on the Mac.”

We’ll know a more concrete release date in the future.

This October, you’ll be exploring another conspiracy in Deus Ex: Human Revolution in the recently-announced DLC called “The Missing Link.” It’s coming [...]

This October, you’ll be exploring another conspiracy in Deus Ex: Human Revolution in the recently-announced DLC called “The Missing Link.” It’s coming to every platform the game is on — including OnLive.

(Spoiler alert!) While Adam was investigating during the course of the game, he disappears for three days. (Aaaaand end spoilers.) Where did he go, and what did he discover? That’s The Missing Link. You’ll be fighting back against the group of Belltower agents that disabled Adam’s augmentations while also escaping from a freighter that’s going…well, somewhere. And you have no idea where.

One of the best parts of this DLC is that you’ll be able to reassign Adam’s augmentations — good news for anyone who ever felt like they were “doing it wrong.”

“We are very excited for Deus Ex: Human Revolution fans to be able to further develop Adam’s journey in the game with The Missing Link DLC,” said David Anfossi, producer of Deus Ex: Human Revolution at Eidos-Montreal. “Gamers will be able to experience a vulnerable side of Adam like never before, which gives the overall game a whole new dimension. The Missing Link propels players into compelling gameplay, beginning with Adam being temporarily stripped of his use of augmentations; new, visually stunning environments; and the continuation of [the game's] conspiracy-rich story.”
