The game will be available through Steam and other digital channels (like Origin) on February 16 for $29.99 (or $34.99).

PC gamers will be able to experience the entire game, plus the DLC, all in one package.

“We’ve done our best to do justice to the PC version and do things the way they should be done for PC. The PC version looks absolutely beautiful. We’re bringing the game to life in a whole new way,” said Markus Mäki, CTO at Remedy.

The PC version will also include support for stereoscopic 3D and multiscreen-capable setups. Developers have also added features like field of view adjustment and a “Hide HUD” feature.

Valve announced this afternoon that a Steam application for iOS and Android has officially entered the beta phase of testing. The app will allow you to chat with friends, see what people are playing, browse groups, view screenshots…pretty much everything the desktop app allows you to do without actually letting you play games. (One day, we’ll have that technology.)

“The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. “Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale – these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone.”

To join the beta, just download the app and log in to your Steam account. While you won’t be able to get in immediately (I speak from experience), you’ll be added to the list of people who want in to the closed beta, and gamers will be added gradually.

For more information, visit the Steam for Mobile Devices page.

Venture into the darkness fight masses of enemies and try to defend your control over the darkness.

Xbox LIVE Gold members can now download an exclusive The Darkness II demo, published by 2K Games. On Jan. 24, PC gamers can download the demo through Steam, and all Xbox LIVE members can get the demo. On the same day, the PlayStation Network in North America will have the demo available, but it won’t be downloadable for most other markets until the next day.

Gold members get an extra week to delve into the single-player story of Jackie Estacado as he battles the Brotherhood. PlayStation gamers be jealous.

The full game comes out in North America, for all systems on Feb. 7, and worldwide on Feb. 10.

RENT

The sequel to Earth Defense Force 2017, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon takes place on an Earth that is once again devastated and infested by giant alien insects. Naturally, only Earth Defense Force can stop them. it’s up to you and your team, Strike Force Lightning, to defend the city of New Detroit against the otherwordly invasion by deestroying the hordes any way you can (even if that means using a building to crush them into an alien insect version of crunchy peanut butter).

I’ll be honest: I’ve never even heard of the Earth Defense Force series of games so I didn’t have any expectations when I loaded this up on my Steam account. The game is a third-person shooter, and you can play through a Campaign, Survival or Co-op mode, each consisting of your generic military dude working his way through wave after wave of alien insects. As Pvt. Hudson would say, it’s a straight up bug hunt and that’s it. There isn’t much in the way of character customization, there isn’t much in the way of story, but there is a lot in the way of killing big alien bugs. A lot. It was super boring after about ten minutes.

Now, my finding this game boring could be due to a few factors. First, I mainly stuck to Survival Mode because I didn’t have any Steam friends to play Co-op with and I got tired of there being no checkpoints in Campaign (you die, you start the entire mission from the start). Second, because there isn’t a story this is mainly a game where you repeat the same thing over and over again, horde after horde of gigantic alien bugs you have to make your way through. Grinding, in the video game sense, is not my forte and it makes me very sleepy very quickly. Third and finally, I had issues with trying to control the camera and my PC on a massive scale. This one I’m willing to take on as user error since I’m not the most expereinced computer gamer beyond the point and click story games. I feel like I would have had less issues (and less motion sickness) if I were playing it on a console istead, but like I said that’s definitely a personal issue and not a game issue specifically.

The good points of the game were that, before it got old hash, mowing down huge bugs was just good old fashion fun, especially in a destructible environment. All the vehicles scattered about the city streets could blow up, all the buildings could crumble to the ground, and both could damage anything around them in the process. Again though, playing single instead of multiple player made the process of destruction seem to drag on forever (the entire game itself isn’t very long - three chapters, each consisting of five missions), and I feel like if I had friends to destroy stuff with I would have been left with a more enthusiastic attitude toward this game. If you’re a lonely bug hunt like myself, you’ll be left with the feeling that you’re destined to repeat Groundhog’s Day until you reach that final mission. If you have it in you to reach that final mission.

No worries, the Steam Holiday Sale for 2011 just started. That’ll clean that pesky wallet right out.

The sale runs from now ’til January 1, 2012. Every day, there’ll be a new set of games with deep discounts as well as new objectives for the Great Gift Pile — where you’ll want to get coal for a change.

Why coal? Completing each set of daily challenges gets you some coal, which you use to enter the Epic Holiday Giveaway, which is actually Super-Epic, mostly because the grand prize is a copy of every. Single. Game. On. Steam. Yeah. That’s a lot.

Coupons and free games are also up for grabs every day as long as you complete the objectives — so hopefully you have some fun and get some coal, too. For more information, visit the Holiday Sale page.

In a message from Gabe Newell to users of digital download service Steam, Newell disclosed that the Steam forums had been hacked [...]

In a message from Gabe Newell to users of digital download service Steam, Newell disclosed that the Steam forums had been hacked on Sunday, November 6.

Unfortunately, as of now, Steam admins have discovered that unauthorized access extended to a database containing, “names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information,” said Newell. “We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.”

So, there’s a good chance that your info is in the hands of someone who isn’t you. Accounts have yet to be compromised following this intrusion, so as of now, Steam isn’t forcing any user actions, meaning that they’re not forcing you to change your account password.

If you’d like to do that, though — better safe than sorry. You should be able to enter your Steam preferences and find a little set of buttons resembling this:

That little “Change password or secret question…” one is what you’re going for. (NB: This is on a Mac, so I don’t know if Steam for Windows looks different.)

So — be safe, be careful, all of that.

Paradox Interactive announced today that Magicka‘s getting another adventure added to the fun: The Stars are Left.

The story is inspired by Cthulhu, and includes several new enemies and bosses.

Only one person in any group of four needs to own the content to take it on — so every group just needs one host player. Here’s a full list of features from Paradox:

• An all-new adventure, several levels long, allowing players to get lost in space and time
• 2 new challenge maps
• 2 new robes
• 2 new bosses
• 5 new achievements
• 7 new enemies
• Considerably more than 2 new items and Magicks
• Also, we make fun of Minecraft this time

See? Making fun of Minecraft. That’ll be interesting.

Valve announced today that Portal 2‘s first DLC, “Portal 2: Peer Review” will be released October 4.

The free content (for PC/Mac, Xbox 360 and PS3) is primarily a new addition to the game’s co-op that continues the story of Atlas and P-Body. New challenge modes will be added to both single-player and co-op, and there will be leaderboards added as well so you can get even more competitive with your friends after you work with them.

Now, this is a little bit after their target “Summer” date of release, so to soothe the pain that is waiting on free things, here’s some free things you don’t have to wait for — the third volume of “Songs to Test By” and a new Turret Comic. Aww.
