But I think that, deep down, I’m glad that this is a collection of the real geeks of our time, rather than a hand-picked selection of our chosen posterchildren.

Why A Geek A Week? Because, in March 2010, cartoonist Len Peralta decided to interview one prominent geek every week for the 52 weeks of the year. From those interviews, he created a trading card for each of his “heroes”. Thinkgeek (one of the founding originals of online geek couture) snapped up the idea and decided to publish and distribute the 52 trading cards that Peralta created.

So, are these part of a trading card game? Well, not exactly. However, each of the cards promise the artwork of Peralta as he illustrates the chosen geek as either a character or as their alter-ego, with “vital nerd stats” calculated on the back of each card. Looks like these are going to be the basketball collector cards of our time!

This first deck features 8 well-known geeks, including Internet rockstar Jonathan Coultron, cartoon TV executive Fred Seibert, tech hostess Veronica Belmont, sci-fi author John Scalzi, riffing experts RiffTrax (Bill Corbett, Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy), senior editor at Lucas Online Bonnie Burton, nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot and web Moriarty Ken Plume.   The rest of Peralta’s artwork will be released in additional sets throughout the year until the full 52 trading cards are completed.

However, that is not the end of ThinkGeek’s selling pitch. In conjunction with the launch of the first set of cards, Len Peralta and ThinkGeek are hosting an eBay charity auction beginning today.  Many of the geeks profiled during the course of Peralta’s project have joined in and have donated some insanely cool autographed products to benefit both EFF & Child’s Play charities. Along with signed copies of the first eight cards, auction items include signed copies of The Guild Issue 1 comic, Wil Weaton’s book “The Day After”, and other goodies.

I know you probably thought we were all finished with holiday guides, but I’m here to bring you one more for 2010. Today’s guide is all about last minute gifts, for those times when you realize right before the holiday that you’ve either left someone off your list, or you’ve been invited to a party that is participating in a gift exchange. I know a lot of offices participate in some sort of white elephant gift exchange during Christmas parties, and sometimes it’s hard to figure out what gifts to bring along. So, along with the rest of the staff here at GamingAngels, I’m going to give you some ideas of things you can grab to make sure you don’t show up empty-handed.

Pretty much everyone on the GamingAngels staff recommended some kind of gift card.  There’s a wide variety of options to choose from, and if you’re looking for something quick and easy, gift cards are your best bet.  The good news is that instead of the standard store card, there’s way more options for your monetary card purchase these days.

If you have friends that are into Facebook games, chances are if you walk into any convenience store, Target or Wal-Mart these days, you’re going to be able to find a points card for specific games: most especially those Zynga games like Frontierville or Mafia Wars.

For those artsy friends or family members on your list, you might try grabbing a Michael’s or JoAnn’s gift card which allow those creative types to buy supplies that they’ll be able to put to good use.

However, if you’ve got a little more time to plan, and want to give something a little more unique than a gift card, we’ve got some options for you there also.

My personal favorite would be to grab one of the plush microbes from ThinkGeek.com.  There’s a wide variety of options, and you’re bound to find something that your recipient will enjoy.  My recommendation would be to grab the one for the common cold.  It is winter here in the States after all and cold/flu season.  It’s the perfect way to give your friends the cold without making them miss work.  The giant plush microbes are fluffy and cute and less than $10, making it a great gift.

And talking about Think Geek, they’ve got quite a few things that might be great for the geeks and gamers on your list.  Check out the Cable Monkey Organizer. This cute little guy will help organize that mess of cords at the back of your computer or TV. He is reusable which is way better than using those messy white ties.

Just in case, let’s also add something edible, like Caffeinated Hot Coco. How can this not be a wonderful last minute idea? Caffeine in something that I could say defines the Holidays. This little pick me up comes in three flavors: Vanilla, Pumpkin Spice and Dutch Chocolate.

SysAdmin Day

A System Administrator’s job is typically to keep the whole company running and help user’s when they have no idea how to use a program. System Administrators can spend an entire day in the server room or working on how to stop the spam that comes in. System Administrators know exactly where you surf and that you check your facebook ten times a day.

Because System Admins work so hard, make sure to thank them on System Admin day on July 31st. But you can go one step further. ThinkGeek is hosting the SysAdmin Pageant where you can nominate your favorite SysAdmin to thank them for the work they do.
