There seems to be only one thing that can beat out soccer in the UK and it’s war. That’s right Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 took the number one spot in the UK sales charts. Not too surprising, since we got the first day sales back last week that were at $310 million. What’s unique is that Call of Duty fans must have wanted even more Call of Duty as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare made it’s way onto the countdown in the 19th spot.

Nintendo held it’s own with Wii Sports Report moving up to number 2. FIFA 10 went down to number 3 and the other soccer game…Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is at 11 while Football Manager 2010 is at 12. Quite a drop.

Dragon Age: Origins also had a huge fall from 5 to 13.

Nintendo barely holds onto the top spot with 4 games in the countdown.

Most people knew that Modern Warfare 2 would sell well. But it’s selling really well. Modern Warfare 2 made a total of $310m in sales revenue across North America and the UK on its first day on sale.

Within 24 hours the title sold 4.7 million units in the two areas within 24 hours.

“The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium,” said Mike Griffith, CEO, Activision Publishing.

“The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers. Modern Warfare 2 has taken interactive experience to unprecedented heights setting a new standard for entertainment.”

FIFA 10 scored another goal as it remained a UK favorite and sold enough to hold onto the top spot in the sales charts for last week. There was some competition with games brand new to the countdown like Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (2), Scribblenauts (12), Star Wars: Clone Wars Republic Heroes (15), Wii Play (19), and Mario Strikers Charged Football (20).

The UK charts should be very interesting in the next few weeks as the onslaught of new games starts. The biggest drop was MySims Agents from 7 to 13. Gran Turismo gets an opposite boost from 12 to 7.

The most popular publisher is overwhelmingly Nintendo with 7 games in the top 20. It’s been a long time since one publisher has dominated that much. Out of the top 20 (for publisher) is Activision.

FIFA 10 took out the competition entering the UK countdown in the number one spot for game sales last week. It beat out pretty heavy competition with Professor Layton and Pandora’s box (2) and Halo 3: ODST (3).

While Wii Sports Resort doesn’t budge, MySims Agents climbs the charts from 16 to 7. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 goes the other way from 7 to 13.

EA has an impressive four titles on the busy game sales chart, but can’t beat Nintendo who holds the lead with five spots. Nintendo’s titles show no affects of slowing down or dropping out of the countdown.

Wii Sports Resort has fallen from the number one spot for game sales in the UK to a UK Sport. Ashes Cricket 2009 by Codemasters has grabbed the top spot.

Ashes Cricket is a cricket series played between England and Australia. It’s a huge rivalry game which dates back to 1882.

Wii Fit and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 drop a spot while Fight Night Round 4 holds it’s ground. Disney’s new 3D animated film, G-Force entered the countdown at the number 9 spot. While another movie title, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen takes a nose dive from 6 to 16.

This week EA Games takes the leading publisher in the UK rights with 6 games in the top 20. Nothing new for EA entered the countdown, but the EA Sports titles seem to be holding strong.

BBFC UK

The British Government has been in a tug of war trying to decide which rating system to go with in the UK. Ultimately the Government decided to go with PEGI grading system. PEGI is the Pan-European Game Information age rating system. BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC tends to rate by age, while PEGI also breaks down by what one might find in the game.

BBFC Director David Cooke responded to the announcement with the following:

“We have argued consistently that any games classification system needs to put child protection at its heart. It must involve consultation with the British public, command their trust, and reflect their sensibilities. It must take account of tone and context and be carried out by skilled and knowledgeable examiners. It needs to involve the provision of full, helpful and carefully weighed information to parents and the public more generally. It must have the power and will to reject or intervene in relation to unacceptable games or game elements. It should make a substantial contribution to media education, for example through dedicated websites and through work with pupils, students and teachers. It must be speedy and cost effective. It must have the capabilities to monitor online gameplay and to attract new members to online classification schemes. And it must be independent in substance as well as appearance, reaching its decisions and providing information on the basis of its own detailed assessments.

“The BBFC has always supported PEGI and wished it well, but it continues to believe that it satisfies these requirements better than PEGI. However, it will cooperate fully in the detailed work needed to give effect to the Government’s decision. And it must be independent in substance as well as appearance, reaching its decisions and providing information on the basis of its own detailed assessments.”

Every Monday morning we report the best selling games for the previous week in the UK. Why not in the US as well? Well I have no idea where I can find that data other than NPD’s at the end of the month.

The information is from ChartTrack where they have many different ways you can organize the data to see which games are selling well in the UK.

Wii Fit claimed another week on the top of the charts. Wii Fit has been at number 1 on the chart for 7 straight weeks! FIFA 09 moves up one spot while X-Men Origins slides spot down. Call of Duty: World at War as well as Call of Duty Modern Warfare both see a bump. Could this be because of the news of something being announced at E3?

Nintendo is the top publisher for the top 20 again with 6 games taking up spots.
