Gaming can be an activity where you follow the character’s journey and everything in real life goes away. But is the escapism so real that gamers wouldn’t even know if there is an emergency?

New York State is testing a way to send emergency warning to video game consoles. The goal is to reach younger residents who spend most of their time on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or Wii rather than on Television or Radio.

Singleton, speaking Thursday at the Interop technology conference in New York City, said the plan makes sense, “considering the amount of time our youth spend on video games.”

Currently the Office of Homeland Security is using Second Life to train 700,000 first responders and are figuring out how to use Twitter to send out information.

Remember this is just a test.

A Sony presentation talking about their consumer strategy moving forward showed some interesting plans that Sony has in store for their gaming area.

After showing 3D gaming at GDC and CES, Sony has confirmed that it intends to put the Playstation 3 as a 3D Games console to be used with upcoming 3D tvs. The current Playstation 3s “will be firmware upgradable to 3D”.

There was also mentions of a “new revenue streams from subscription”. That’s right gamers, something may be threatening the free Playstation Network. The argument of a free online service is what Playstation fans have been using to justify the PS3 experience. But it appears that may change and there may be subscriptions coming down the line to access Sony’s top-end PSN services.

Parents looking for a new way for their kids to play that isn’t sitting in front of a tv might want to check out Swinxs (http://www.swinxs.com). Swinxs has only been in the US for two months and is already receiving awards from various parenting groups. The awards are: 1) The 2009 Game of the Year Award in the Electronic Toy category by Creative Child Magazine 2) The National Parenting Center’s 2009 Seal of Approval 3) The Gold Award by the National Parenting Publications Awards 4) The 10 Best Audio Award by Dr. Toy and 5) The 100 Best Children’s Products Award by Dr. Toy.

Swinxs was designed for ages four and above and encourages kids in physical, creative and educational play.

The National Parenting Center, in its review of Swinxs, states, “Swinxs is a gaming console, but we guarantee it is unlike any console you have ever seen or played with. Swinxs is your electronic game host and kids absolutely loved the hours of fun they had with their new virtual pal.”

Here is a video trailer that explains what Swinxs is:

The system is upgraded by connecting it to a computer via USB and then the software looks for updates. There are currently 21 games to choose from and they support a developer community to create more games for the console.
Here is a tutorial showing how easy it is to use their sdk:

The console is available on Amazon.com for $150.

Additionally, the expo will include contests, door prizes and a performance from Seattle chiptune artist, Leeni.

I love to game and I also love to shop. Even better is to combine to two loves and shop for games! [...]

I love to game and I also love to shop. Even better is to combine to two loves and shop for games! However, sometimes, there can be dry spells in gaming or you already have 15 games that you are desperately trying to get through before you commit to any more game purchases. Well…here is one solution and one that may come in handy AND keep things affordable for this holiday season! We can’t all blow $60 on a game but we might be able to afford a $15 wallet or a $25 t-shirt. I’ve compiled a list of online stores that sell a wide assortment of gamer apparel and accessories for the gamer and geek in all of our lives. (Please fight the urge to order one of everything on these site…I am still fighting it!)

I am a huge fan of Hot Topic. HUGE fan. There are a ton of Hot Topic stores in my area and I always make it a point to stop in and check out what they have in stock. Every store can carry a different variety of items so my rule of thumb has been: if you see something that you like, buy it because the next time you go it might not be there or it might not be at the store nearest you! You can find almost everything in their online store but don’t tempt fate! I’ve been shopping at Hot Topic for years and over that time I have amassed a rather fun and eclectic collection of gaming apparel and accessories. From Nintendo controller messenger bags to the matching wallets; various gaming t-shirts like Resident Evil Zombie Hunter thermals to Legend of Zelda; from wristbands to shoelaces! The list goes on! Check out what Hot Topic has in stock right now!

A few of my faves:

OMG….it has ears!

I have this…and I love it!

Another great site is Jinx.com. http://jinx.com/ They cater to the inner and the outer geek in all of us. From IT to console gaming to tabletop gaming to manga, you are guaranteed to find something to stuff into any geek’s stocking! Their prices are right too! T-shirts are priced at around $17-$23 and hoodies range from $34-$40. They even have stickers to decorate your car, laptop, or game console. Here are just a few fun ones out of MANY!

If you are looking for something special, something a little more unique…you might give Etsy.com a try. Here you will find handmade – sometimes one of a kind items – that cater to your one love – ALL THINGS GEEK. This is a great place to not only buy but to sell items as well. If you have a crafty and creative side, this is the place for you. Form jewelry to dolls to apparel to greeting cards, you are sure to find something for that special geek in your life. In some cases, you must act fast, these one of a kind items will get snapped up in an instant. In other cases, you may be able to special order items in specific colors and sizes. If it is a gift for the holidays or for any special occasion, be sure to order early!

For those of you who are like me, and have a TON of stuff, check out the Video Game Memorabilia Museum and see just how your collection compares, or better yet, how much you are missing!

Your experiences may vary at each store, I have purchased items from Hot Topic, Amazon, and eBay with stellar service and product satisfaction. I have friends that have had the same experience with Jinx.com and Etsy.com as well. I have not purchased from the other stores listed, but there are some great items at all of them.

Thanks for reading and if you will excuse me, I have some shopping to do!!!
