Yeah, really. The press release talked about how awesome it was that with every new Wii, you’d get Wii Sports Resort and Wii MotionPlus…and then it just added on, “Oh, yeah. There’s a black Wii available, too. Whatever.”

In the U.S., the new console will retail for $199.99, the same price as the old white console a lot of us have already…except that it comes with more stuff.

The new console and packages will be available starting May 9.

With more than 27.2 million Wii units “in the wild,” well, it only makes sense that software also sold like hotcakes. For December alone, six Nintendo titles found themselves in the top ten. These are: New Super Mario Bros. Wii at No. 1 with more than 2.8 million sold, Wii Sports Resort at No. 2 with more than 1.7 million sold, Wii Fit Plus with the Wii Balance Board accessory at No. 3 with more than 1.7 million sold, Wii Play at No. 6 with more than 1.0 million sold, Mario Kart Wii at No. 7 with more than 936,000 sold and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story for Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi at No. 10 with more than 656,000 sold.

That’s a lot of little plastic boxes for one month.

Nintendo did even better in the year-long numbers with seven games in the top ten. New Super Mario Bros. Wii made it to the number 2 spot (that’s a LOT of games sold in two months!), both Wii Fit versions found a place, and so did the rest of the usual suspects: Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, and Pokemon (because any time a Pokemon game comes out, the kiddies…and the adulties…go nuts).

Anyone else notice that no third-party games made it on that list? (Is that unexpected? No. Totally expected.)

Nintendo was nice enough to provide this little chart, listing the hardware top-sellers for the past ten years. (Here’s a hint: they’re on top for seven of those years.) Click it if you want to see it full size.

FIFA 10 took out the competition entering the UK countdown in the number one spot for game sales last week. It beat out pretty heavy competition with Professor Layton and Pandora’s box (2) and Halo 3: ODST (3).

While Wii Sports Resort doesn’t budge, MySims Agents climbs the charts from 16 to 7. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 goes the other way from 7 to 13.

EA has an impressive four titles on the busy game sales chart, but can’t beat Nintendo who holds the lead with five spots. Nintendo’s titles show no affects of slowing down or dropping out of the countdown.

Wii Sports Resort

Nintendo just announced that Wii Sports Resort will have a new limited edition bundle starting October 12. The limited-edition bundle will come with Wii Sports Resort game and two Wii MotionPlus accessories (previously it came with one).

The bundle will be available for $59.99. The Wii Sports Resort that comes with one Wii MotionPlus unit for $49.99. Additional Wii MotionPlus units are $19.99 each so you save $9.99.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman : Arkham Asylum holds onto the top spot in the UK game sales charts for last week. With Wii Sports Resort just waiting for it to falter. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare makes a HUGE move from 10 to 3. That game has been all over the place on the charts. Dissidia Final Fantasy enters at 10 and Champions Online enters at 18.

The most popular publisher in the UK right now is a tie between Activision and EA at 4 games each. EA though is starting to see their sports titles fall a bit, so we’ll see how long they can hang on.

Wii Sports Resort on Facebook

Wii Sports Resort is a huge hit in the United States and now Nintendo is expanding the experience to Facebook. Nintendo has launched the Wii Sports Resort Facebook application, which will let you challenge Facebook friends.

Scores will be posted so all can see which could allow you some bragging rights. From launching it, it seems you have to start a party in order to play so you will have to invite others to play.

The challenges and games aren’t listed, but if you are looking for something to play on Facebook you can give Wii Sports Resort a try.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Batman is a very popular DC character, so it’s no big surprise that probably the best Batman game made yet, is on top of the UK Game Sales charts this week. Batman: Arkham Asylum has beaten out Ashes Cricket 2009 for the top spot. Ashes Cricket 2009 drops to number 3 as Wii Sports Resort drops down to number 2. Activision’s Wolfenstein fell to the fourth position while Wii Fit rounds out the top 5.

The biggest move is definitely Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare from 17 to 10th position. Maybe a free xp weekend? But then Activision has some problems as Prototype drops to 16 from 10.

Nintendo has been knocked out of the top publisher spot in the UK while EA and Activision duke it out to see who will be number 1. Both are tied at 5 titles on the countdown each.

Wii Sports Resort

Nintendo has released the sales figures for Wii Sports Resort and the title has sold more than 1 million copies in the US since July 26. Japan and Europe already reached over a million copies.

“Millions of consumers worldwide have demonstrated that they want their summer vacations to keep going,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Wii Sports Resort provides both novice and veteran players a fun, virtual escape to a resort island with their friends and family – something that will be even more appealing as the weather turns cooler this fall and winter.”

Wii Sports Resort also includes one Wii MotionPlus accessory which could be making the difference. Wii MotionPlus accessories are sold for $19.99 separately.

Ashes Cricket

UK Gamers are still buying and playing Ashes Cricket 2009 from Codemasters to keep it in the top spot this week. Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit are in the second and third slots just waiting for Ashes Cricket to falter. Ubisoft’s Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood moved up from seventh to fourth place while Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 continues to drop ending in 5th place.

Madden NFL 10 may be a big hit in the US, but it enters at the eighth spot in the countdown. Also bad news for EA as Fight Night Round 4 has the largest drop from 4 to 12.

EA Sports is keep EA in the charts with the most games on the chart (6).

Wii Sports Resort has fallen from the number one spot for game sales in the UK to a UK Sport. Ashes Cricket 2009 by Codemasters has grabbed the top spot.

Ashes Cricket is a cricket series played between England and Australia. It’s a huge rivalry game which dates back to 1882.

Wii Fit and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 drop a spot while Fight Night Round 4 holds it’s ground. Disney’s new 3D animated film, G-Force entered the countdown at the number 9 spot. While another movie title, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen takes a nose dive from 6 to 16.

This week EA Games takes the leading publisher in the UK rights with 6 games in the top 20. Nothing new for EA entered the countdown, but the EA Sports titles seem to be holding strong.
