Women Gamers are Underappreciated
Interpret could have just spoken to us, but I guess actually doing research is a good thing. Either way we have the same conclusion: Women Gamers are underappreciated by the industry. The report titled, “”Games and Girls: Video Gaming’s Ignored Audience,” finds that the large female gaming market has more nuances than people realize. The report surveyed 9000 consumers aged 12-65 about their preferences. The number of women gaming has increased but as we have stated many times, “marketing efforts have largely ignored the group”. Not to mean that they need specific marketing to, but more of a gender neutral marketing approach that includes women as serious consumers. The study found that console use among women gamers is up significantly over the past two years (and not talking about the Wii here). 21% of women gamers play a 360 and 16% play a PS3. This is up from 17% and

Interview: Kinou Games Group
Spokesperson Seira of Kinou Games tells us that their group makes dual language releases, with voice actors in both Japanese and English as well as JP and English text Their goal is to encourage the inclusion of both languages in the original version of the game, and work with a Japanese doujin group called ZeroZigen who also supports including an English language version in Japanese games, and, ultimately, doing an exchange; having English-speaking game makers include a Japanese version. She also said “For our side, my group tries to be inclusive of marginalized people in our games, putting them in starring roles. Papa Pirate, Baby Bandit will be our first release and our focus for this was a strong female protagonist in many different roles, the ever-elusive brown people in major character roles, and gay relationships that are loving and PG.” Coming at the end of May will be a

Mobile gamers more likely to be young and female, audience beats television ratings
iPhones and Android devices are making gaming more of a female-dominated activity, according to findings published by mobile analytics firm Flurry. These studies showed that mobile gamers are more likely to be younger, female and more affluent and educated than the average American. The average age of mobile gamers is 28, compared to console gamers’ 34 years, and 53 percent of mobile gamers just happen to be women. (For the consoles, women still come in at 40 percent.) The Flurry study also stated that “[t]here is also greater density in the 18-49 bracket, which indicates that [Apple] iOS and Android devices are attracting users during their earning years versus, in particular, their teenage years, where they likely cannot afford more expensive mobile devices.” Females who play mobile games overall skewed older, with more women in the 26-65 age bracket compared to the men. North America played the most mobile social

Opinion: Why Games Aren’t Just for Guys
On twitter, @ladyluck34 sent me a link to an article she found insulting. I had to check out the CNN article titled, “Five bloody new video games for guys”. The headline was interesting but I know headlines can typically get blown out for a reaction, so I didn’t pay much attention. The article was written by Scott Steinberg, a respected individual in the world of gaming. He runs his own game consulting firm and is often interviewed on major networks. Imagine my surprise when within the first couple of paragraphs, I realize that the headline had not been sensationalized, but that he honestly meant to write an article about five games that guys would like because, “Sometimes you just want to saw the tentacles off a slavering demon or invite a rampaging zombie to suck on your double-barreled shotgun. ” From there he talks about shooing the wife out and

Online Game of the Week – Ninja Mahjong
This week’s OGOTW takes us back to an old favorite of a lot of casual gamers, Mahjong! In this game, just match two tiles at a time to clear the board. When you have a few minutes to sit and play a casual game, what genre do you gravitate toward? Good luck!
