GamingAngels Weekly Roundup Episode 3
We’re back down to two-thirds AGAIN, so Tiffany and Elizabeth cover the week’s best news along with the question of the week, what we’ve been playing (yes, Portal 2 is in there), and more. Full show notes are below the player. Download the file here. The question of the week: What game excited us the most, but ended up being the biggest letdown for us? (Thanks, Brian!) The critics and fans are disagreeing a little bit about Portal 2. What’s up with that? Revisiting Kinect in Netflix — it’s no Minority Report, that’s for sure. The ESRB is using robots to rate downloadable titles. Basically. No one’s going to abuse that, ever. Someone at the New York Times seems to think that gamers falling in love in MMOs is some odd phenomenon, because really. Like gamers are ever going to find love IRL. And hey! The PSN is down again.

Jane McGonigal: Reality is Broken at the Science Pub In Portland, OR
Portland, a place where the geek & chic come to play and make a home, was the center stage for Jane McGonigal’s presentation “Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change The World.” The Science pub is put together by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and the idea is that you can go to one of the talks, learn about cutting-edge topics in science and technology from leading experts, and ask questions all while drinking a pint and with some tater tots. So when I heard that Jane McGonigal was going to be at the Bagdad theater where I presented at Ignite #9 (Samus: Legend of a Girl Gamer), about her new book “Reality is Broken,” the math was very simple… Jane McGonigal + video games + beer + tater tots = EPIC WIN! See? Even Einstein would back me up on that

State of Azeroth: For whom the Barad Tols
State of Azeroth took a bit of a break over the holidays with me being away with family, so I hope all of you readers had a wonderful holiday and new year! We are now a month into having Cataclysm, Paragon has made quick work of the raid bosses (grats guys!), many have reached 85 and even more have made new alts. Personally I’ve had my main reach 85, race-changed my Mage and rolled an alt. And now we’re on the verge of a new patch which is currently on the test realms. So lets dive into the shenanigans eh? News With Cataclysm now having been out for a month, Blizzard released their sales figures which broke records. In one month, Blizzard has sold over 4.7 million copies of the game and will more than likely sell more. I’m even more convinced that Blizzard has a big building like Scrooge

Cataclysm sells a lot of copies and then some
Blizzard already set a record by selling 3.3million copies of Cataclysm on launch day, and the record breaking continues with the news today that they have sold more than 4.7 million copies of the game in a single month. The game being simultaneously released in 10 countries on December 7th and in four more on December 9th definitely helped to boost sales. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is one of the larger expansions of the game since the game world itself was completely changed. “We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’ve been floored by the community’s response so far, and we’d like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for

11% of World of Warcraft players make 50% of playtime
World of Warcraft Cataclysm became the fastest selling PC game of all time when it sold 3.3 million copies in the 1st day. This should mean that tons of people are playing the title already right? Not really. While everyone may be playing a little here or there (I even just started playing last night), the top 11% of WoW players generated 50% of all the playtime hours according to stats collected by Raptr. The top player for World of Warcraft logged in 149 hours in one week. In other stats, average WoW playtime is identical to top FPS on the console. The average play on the first day of release was 6.23 hours. World of Warcraft is not slowing down as playtime has grown 5 times since just this past summer. Raptr is going to continue to analyze WoW players, because based on these stats and others, you all

I’m a Night Elf, or: How I Learned to Stop Hating and Love “World of Warcraft”
In the beginning… I wish I could say it happened in a more exciting place, but it was in high school, with a friend, in the backseat of a van. And before you think I’m talking about something dirty, I’ll put a stop to that – I’m talking about World of Warcraft. Not long into the ride (our assistant band director was taking us home from a weekend away at a university honor band), he leaned over and said, “You’re a gamer, right?” Naturally, I said I was. He continued, “So, do you know about Blizzard?” I didn’t play much more than JRPGs at that point, so I just kind of looked at him funny, instead. “Blizzard what? Snow?” (Since I was born in Florida, I have an innate fascination with everything related to snow. You can feel free to ask me about hurricanes sometime.) “Dude, they’re hilarious. They make

New in-game pets available to buy in the Blizzard Store
Just in time for the holidays, Blizzard has put two new pets in their store for players to buy as in-game companions! Lil Ragnaros and the Moonkin Hatchling are the two newest pets to enter the store. Last year was the first time that Blizzard branched out into selling in-game items and it’s proved a success with the very first two pets (Lil KT and the Pandaren Monk) that they’ve released subsequent pets and even a mount! As mentioned in our MMORPG holiday guide, these in-game pets would make great presents for the WoW player in your life, and they’re reasonably priced at $10! The only drawback is that the Moonkin Hatchling will change it’s look based on what faction your character is on. Meaning if you’re Horde you can’t run around with an Alliance Hatchling or vice versa. Now to only hope that they put out a Lil Marrowgar

The State of Azeroth: The World will break…
Well Azeroth is now broken. I hope you all got in any last minute things done before things like Loremaster were completely changed, or got some lucky mount drops before ZG went away. Well news and more below from the past month or so. Plus a new advice section as well as a contest surprise at the end! Blizzcon Blizzcon 2010 was pretty fun, and you can find my full coverage under the Angels on the Go section. Nothing earth-shattering (har har) was announced, but we did get to see more in-depth into the changes for dungeons and raids come Cataclysm. Plus the new launcher was released! Overall I had fun just with meeting all of the cool people I did and hopefully will have more of a chance to hang out next year. Cataclysm (aka News) It’s hard to even know where to start there has been so much
